Furious MLB Free Picks – Miserable Reds Meet Tragic Athletics
June 21, 2010
The Cincinnati Reds are still relevant in a pretty brutal NL Central division, but a series sweep against the Mariners has dropped them 1.5 games behind. They still have a chance to compete for the division crown, and clashing with an MLB betting bluster like the Oakland Athletics might have come at the right time.
Oakland started off the season seriously competitive but has since dropped 8.0 games back of Texas in the AL West. A 1-4 SU baseball betting record over the past 5 games certainly hasn’t helped much, but the team’s record of 8-1 SU when facing the Reds might give them the confidence they need to get back in the playoff race.
Getting things started for Oakland will be Gio Gonzalez, a plucky left hander who has gone 6-5 SU as a utility pitcher. He’s been tested as a starter but hasn’t exactly won the Athletics over, especially since allowing 14 hits, 10 earned runs and 194 pitches in his last two starts.

Cincinnati will counter with Mike Leake who has been a delight for the Reds. He tallied his first loss of the season against the Dodgers, bringing him to a 5-1 SU record in 13 starts with a 3.02 ERA for the season. Not bad for a 22-year old.
The truth about Leake is that, while young, him and the rest of the pitching stable has been brilliant for the Reds. Cincinnati averages 4.8 runs per game overall, but on the road they drop to eighth overall in the NL with 4.2 runs per game. In their last 5 games they’ve averaged just 2.8 runs. It’s not pitching that’s the problem for Cincinnati. It’s run support.
Where To Watch: FSOH, CSCA
Nothing riles up a clubhouse in the early part of the season than letting down your pitching stable as a whole. The Reds have some aces up their sleeves, and considering that Oakland is still in wait-and-see mode with the left-handed Gonzalez, the Reds should come out swinging on the utility pitcher and back up their pitchers on the mound, as well as their betting investors.
