Horse Racing: Saturday Quick Picks

Race-day: 8/1/2009

It’s a fantastic day weekend for horseplayers as the Grade I Diana, the Grade II San Clemente, the Grade II Jim Dandy and the Grade I Haskell Invitational highlight the first few days of August.

BetOnline is going to be there to offer wagering on all of those big time races, including the Jim Dandy which is highlighted in our Saturday Quick Picks article.

Take a look at all of the Saturday Quick Pick races this week.

** Always check for accuracy concerning program numbers.

Saratoga – Race 8

$70,000 Lake Luzerne Stakes

1 1/16th miles on turf

4:42 pm est.

#5 Love Cove – - She should get the perfect trip behind the speed and figures to take over with ease in the lane with Kent Desormeaux aboard.

#7 Cagey Girl – - She comes off the bench for underrated trainer David Duggan, might be lone speed in this race, and has a 2-1-2 record out of 6 starts on the Saratoga lawn.

#6 Chestoria – - She has a shot to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Caribbean Sunset. She’s faced much better than this in the past and could be the horse to beat.

Saratoga – Race 10

$500,000 Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes

1 1/8 miles on dirt

5:47 pm est.

#3 Kensei – - Trainer Steve Asmussen further stretches out the son of Mr. Greeley and Edgar Prado stays aboard. He’s going the best right now out of the horses in this field.

#5 Charitable Man – - Will he come out of his Belmont run intact? That’s the big question for this ultra-talented son of Lemon Drop Kid. If he does, then he could win this race by a big margin.

#1 Saratoga Sinner – - He hasn’t been seen since winning the Grade III Holy Bull in January, but he’s got a lot of talent and is training sharply. He could surprise at nice odds on Saturday.

Del Mar – Race 5

$60,000 Allowance

1 1/16 miles on turf

7:00 pm est.

#5 Droumeragh - – The odds will be very nice on this runner going for trainer Jeff Mullins who claims him back from R. Ayers. Mullins stretches him out and must believe he’s got a runner on his hand for plopping down $80,000 for him.

#2 Angus – - He will be the favorite after two very good races over the turf, a victory and a third place finish. Jockey Joel Rosario knows him well and he can stalk or close depending on the pace.

#1 Times Gone By – - Trainer Richard Mandella is taking his time developing this $1.9 million dollar by sired by Giant’s Causeway. Victor Espinoza takes the ride and he breaks from the rail.

Del Mar – Race 9

$50,000 Claimer

6 furlongs on Polytrack

9:00 pm est.

#8 Tall Texan – - The son of Point Given drops out of a Grade II for trainer Richard Mandella. Mandella doesn’t always win with his droppers, he rarely drops a horse, but Tall Texan is the most talented horse in this field and should get a nice trip from the 8 hole.

#7 Six Pack Abs – - Sadler drops this guy out of a Grade II as well and because of the works, he’s going exceptionally fast in the mornings, I would think that Sadler was trying to give him away. The fact that Garrett Gomez takes the call tells me that they’re going for the money in this race.

#3 Lucky Honey – -This is yet another dropper in this race. The difference between Lucky Honey and Six Pack Abs and Tall Texan is that Lucky Honey is dropping out of the allowance conditions. That, and the fact that he’s a closer, means that he could have a big shot depending on the pace.
