Free Picks NCAA Football – Middle Tennessee vs. Louisiana-Lafayette

September 25, 2010

Nobody ever pays attention to the Sun Belt Conference, and they should because free picks in NCAA football are difficult when you have juggernauts butting heads.

When it’s two fledgling teams from the Sun Belt Conference, things get a bit easier and it’s a far more reliable practice to trust the betting trends.

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will visit the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns this weekend in conference play.

The long-term, head to head history between these two teams would seemingly make this game a tough free picks matchup for NCAA football betting. In their past 10 meetings, they’re tied at 5-5 SU with Louisiana-Lafayette holding the edge on the betting line at 6-4 ATS.

Before we keep going with some betting trends and free picks, NCAA football scheduling is actually lending a helping hand to LA-Lafayette. They are not only playing at home, they’re also coming off a bye week which means that they’ve had two weeks to prepare for this game.

Middle Tennessee (1-2) vs. Louisiana-Lafayette (1-1)

NCAA Football Spread: Middle Tennessee -2.5 (53)

It’s a good thing too, because they need all the help they can get. Second-year starter Chris Masson has started to flash as a quarterback for the Ragin’ Cajuns but he’s also still showing signs of inconsistency. He’s completed just 48.7 percent of his passes.

Still, getting riled up about the quality of these two teams’ rosters is just silly. They’re Sun Belt guys, so we have to expect some awful stats.

The biggest reason to make Middle Tennessee a free pick on the NCAA football wagering board this weekend is that they’re primarily a passing team. Quarterback Logan Kilgore has managed a 126.30 rating thus far with 65.9 percent of his passes finding their targets.

He’s also posted 333 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, though he has 4 interceptions as well.

Kilgore will still have plenty to do. LA-Lafayette is seemingly a very vulnerable pass defense, especially after allowing 438-yards passing against Arkansas State last weekend. But they still won the game.

I think Kilgore is going to be too excited for this game, and post too many picks to give Middle Tennessee a real shot at winning this game.

The Ragin’ Cajuns hold a 5-2 SU record over the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in their last 7 meetings. I see no reason to go against the grain, which is why my free pick in this NCAA football tilt goes to the home team.
