Of course, although the wins were nice, there’s a big difference between playing North Texas and Presbyterian at home, and the challenge of going to the Plains at night for this one.
If you’re looking to make Clemson one of your free college football betting picks this weekend, then you’d better hope the Tigers can continue to run the ball like they have. Because for all the talk about quarterback Kyle Parker, running backs Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper have been the difference so far.
Through two games, those two are a major reason why Clemson currently ranks 24th in the country in rushing offense, averaging 229 yards per game on the ground. Ellington is the team’s power back, scoring three touchdowns so far, while Jamie Harper provides the speed, averaging over nine yards per carry. It doesn’t matter who gets it done or how on Saturday, just that one of them does. Because without a running game, Clemson doesn’t stand a chance at Auburn.
Speaking of Auburn, the Tigers come into this game off a gritty win at Mississippi State last Thursday night. In that matchup, the Tigers did what they needed to do to win. They may not have scored one second half point, but they did make several crucial stops late, holding on for the victory.
Like Clemson, Auburn prefers to get it done on the ground, as they rank No. 9 in the country, averaging 278.5 yards per game. There are several backs who’ll get carries in this game, including Onterio McCalebb, freshman Michael Dyer and senior Mario Fannin. However, the guy who makes this offense go is quarterback Cam Newton. Simply put, the guy has been a revelation on the Plains so far. He has thrown for 322 yards and five touchdowns this season, while also leading this team with 241 yards on the ground. The 6’6 signal-caller has the size and speed to give defensive coordinators nightmares, and we expect it’ll be no different on Saturday.
However, after all that, we’re still going to take Clemson and the points in this ball-game.
It’s not that we don’t like Auburn to win, because we do. But this was a team that was lucky to escape Starkville with a win last weekend, and could easily be entering this game with a 1-1 mark.
And for all the talk about Auburn making plays down the stretch, the truth was Mississippi State gave away just as many plays as Auburn stopped them on. There were overthrown balls, dropped catches, and a litany of other problems that won’t happen to Clemson when they take the field. This is a well coached team, and most importantly experienced. The jitters that MSU quarterback Chris Relf experienced down the stretch last weekend won’t happen with Kyle Parker.
In the end, take Clemson to cover, and Auburn to win in this weekend’s college football free picks. Get your wager in now!
