Free College Football Picks – Nevada’s Monster Spread Against Colorado St.

September 11, 2010

You know what my favorite free college football picks are? The ones where I think the winning team is going to clear the TOTAL all by themselves. Nevada is getting a monster -23.5 football spread this weekend, along with an inflated 56.5 TOTAL to clear. Considering they’re playing the Colorado State Rams, it’s safe to say they’ll probably clear both.

The Wolf Pack are coming off a viscious reaming of Eastern Washington where quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw for 306 yards and dumped in 4 touchdowns (2 passing, 2 rushing) in a 49-24 rout. The 553 total yards of offense, 24 first-downs and 1 turnover they generated in a lopsided win should encourage them as a free pick this weekend against Colorado State.

It’s a stark difference from what the Colorado State Rams managed to do while being canned by the rival Colorado Buffalos in opening weekend. In a 24-3 loss, the Rams managed just 245 total yards of offense, along with only 14 first-downs while coughing up 3 interceptions.

Don’t fool yourself in to thinking that Colorado State can clear a big line. Quarterback Pete Thomas has a big arm, but as a freshman he’s going to make plenty of mistakes, especially when he’s chasing a volatile and explosive offense like Nevada.

The Wolf Pack’s defense is far from perfect, but their offense forces the hand of lower-end opponents by running the scoreboard. That means Thomas will be backed in to a corner and forced to throw, and the secondary will be waiting to hawk down those juicy picks during the entire second half.

Nevada’s defense is pretty suspect in general. They gave up 432 yards against and only generated two turnovers against lowly Eastern Washington. But I mean, we’re talking about Colorado State. If they can’t stifle this offense, than Colin Kaepernick is going to be in for a heavy workload this season.
