Free College Football Picks – Mountaineers Take On Marshall In Coal Bowl
September 10, 2010
Marshall didn’t exactly get out to a thundering start in Week 1 with a brutal 45-7 loss against Ohio State, which gives them slim chances of sliding in as my free college football pick this week. The Thundering Herd will face the West Virginia Mountaineers, who opened their season with a convincing win over Coast Carolina. The Mountaineers won’t just need a win to stay in the AP Top-25 next week, they’ll need a big one.
Quarterback Geno Smith threw for 216 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 20-of-27 pass attempts. While he did register an interception, it’s safe to say that the sophomore puts West Virginia in capable hands heading down the stretch.

The big playmaker for the West Virginia favorites this weekend is, of course, Noel Devine. On 23 attempts, Devine averaged 4.8 yards per carry with a total of 111 rushing yards and a score. He also caught two passes for a total of 18.0 yards.
While West Virginia doesn’t have nearly the type of weaponry that Ohio State does, they have talented playmakers matched up against an absolutely abysmal team. The only glaring hope for Marshall is the fact that they have an inside man on their team. Their current coach, Doc Holliday, is a former West Virginia assistant.

Still, I’m not sure that anything Holliday says to his team on Friday night will bolster the hopes of those daring enough to throw their money on this free college football pick. The Thundering Herd managed just 199 yards of total offense and generated three turnovers against the Buckeyes.
Marshall may have the namesake, but they’re simply not a very good team. This seems like a monster spread for West Virginia, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see them double it. West Virginia is 5-0 SU in their last 5 meetings with Marshall and have gone 2-2 ATS and both of those spread losses have come against betting lines of -20.0 or more.
The Mountaineers still have the team speed and offensive prowess to haunt the Thundering Herd the same way Ohio State did. It might be as much of a blowout, but don’t undersell West Virginia’s ability to clamp down on defense. Marshall’s only score of the game against Ohio State was a blocked field goal return. No field goals. No touchdowns.
No chance in the Coal Bowl. I wish all my free college football picks were this easy to make.
