Free Betting Tips – 49ers vs Panthers

October 24, 2010

As we offer our free betting tip for the NFL this weekend, we take note that the San Francisco 49ers picked up their first win last week, and the preseason favorites in the NFC West look to build on the momentum from that win as they visit Charlotte for a game with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

It starts at 1 PM ET at Bank of America Stadium (natural turf), and in the NFL betting lines for Sunday, the Niners are three-point road favorites, with the total posted at 35.5 points.

Our free betting tips will be made based on those numbers.

TV: Fox

NFL Odds:

San Francisco -3

Carolina +3

Total 35.5

Here are some of the trends as they impact our free betting tip on this game:

  • San Francisco has played eight of its last 12 games UNDER the total
  • San Francisco has lost five of its last six games SU
  • San Francisco is 2-4-1 ATS in its last seven games
  • San Francisco has played four of its last six road games UNDER the total
  • San Francisco has lost nine of its last ten road games SU
  • Carolina has lost its last five games SU
  • Carolina has covered one of its last five games
  • Carolina has played five of its last six games UNDER the total
  • Carolina has played its last seven home games UNDER the total
  • Carolina has won 15 of its last 23 home games SU
  • Carolina has covered four of its last 12 home games

It was either a great defensive performance on the part of the Niners, or an awful offensive showing on the part of the Raiders last week, depending on how you want to look at it. But San Francisco nonetheless came away with the 17-9 win, which covered the number with the Niners as a 7.5-point favorite.

When you look at the free betting tip here, you’ve got to look at the Panthers and just shake your head. Carolina has scored a grand total of 34 points in the last four games, and coach John Fox is now working for his professional future, as he has been told by management that they are not ready to ink him to a contract extension.

Of course, coaches love to talk to players about how this is a "results-oriented business" and that it’s "what have you done for me lately" when it comes to cutting veterans, so you can’t fault Carolina management for leaving its options open. Fox, who was looking to the future when inserting Jimmy Clausen into the lineup, is now looking very much at the present as he puts Matt Moore back in as his starter.

Here are the head-to-head football betting trends as they might affect the free betting tip we offer on this game:

  • Eleven of the last 13 meetings have gone OVER the total
  • Carolina has won six of the last eight meetings SU
  • Carolina has covered nine of the last ten meetings
  • Five of the last six meetings in Charlotte have gone OVER the total

Moore comes back into the fray with 42% completions and six interceptions in 59 throws, which doesn’t give us a lot of confidence in our free betting tip, and the Panthers never bothered to go get some people who could catch the ball other than Steve Smith.

The Panthers have no one else who has more than ten catches. Such lack of weaponry could short-circuit Moore’s return, and allows a team like the Niners to concentrate on Carolina’s running game, which hasn’t been bad, considering the circumstances. Smith is expected to come back from his ankle injury, but Carolina was not producing much with him in good health.

Let me tell you what prevents us from loading up with San Francisco, even on the road – the occasionally horrific play of Alex Smith, who has thrown nine interceptions and got chewed out more than once form the coaching staff last week against Oakland.

He’ll start one more week, and then I think they’ll re-evaluate. Neither QB can be trusted, but the running attacks are not bad, which means the clock gets chewed. We’re going "under" in our free betting tip in the NFL this Sunday.

JAY’S PLAY: UNDER 35.5 **
