Football Spread – Chargers vs 49ers

September 2, 2010

The San Diego Chargers travel up the I-5 to San Francisco to take on the 49ers in the final preseason game before the games turn real next week. The Chargers and the 49ers are both clear favorites to win the AFC and NFC West divisions respectively. The football spread favors the 49ers by -3½ points over the chargers.

If NFL bettors don’t want to bet on the football spread, they can bet on the moneyline that will pay bettors +160 if the San Diego Chargers upset the 49ers. The game total set at 35½ points.

Game Total 35½

Game Time: 10:00pm

San Francisco is looking to complete an undefeated preseason for the first time since 1992. However, if you ask anyone involved with the 49ers, they will be looking for regular season wins and an NFC West division title.

In Thursday night’s game, we’ll see a few of the starters for a series, although wide receiver Michael Crabtree (neck), tackle Joe Staley (knee), and running back Frank Gore (precautionary) will likely stay on the sidelines against the Chargers.

The 49ers quarterback situation is set with Alex Smith as the number one and David Carr as the number two so that means we’ll see Nate Davis get some burn under center as he tries to prove he’s worthy of holding a clipboard as the third quarterback.

Franchised linemen Aubrayo Franklin will see his first action of the season after signing a franchise tender with the team recently.

The Chargers you likely won’t see too much of any of the starters as they will play it safe to avoid injuries to their stars. Philip Rivers and the first team will likely play the first series to keep fresh for the start of the regular season but it will be on the backups to beat the 49ers.

Billy Volek and Jonathan Crompton will take most of the snaps for the Chargers; this doesn’t bode well for San Diego as the two have combined to throw four interceptions and no touchdowns during the preseason.

These two teams have met 38 times in the preseason with the Chargers leading the series 20-18.

The game will be a dog to watch, the backups will see most of the plays and both teams will be playing to avoid injury. The key to this game is seeing which team cares the least and bet the football spread. The 49ers are looking for a perfect preseason and that is a little more motivation than the Chargers have. Don’t expect many big plays which has me leaning towards the under.

NFL Betting Pick: San Francisco -3½ and Under 35½ points.
