The Michigan State Spartans saw their perfect season come to an end last week after an 8-0 start, and teams that lose their first game this late into the season almost invariably let down the following week. Granted, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are just 1-8, having lost eight straight games since winning their opener, and they are just 3-6 against the spread, but they have stayed inside this huge 24-point spread every time but once.

The Spartans were flying high before their visit to Iowa last week, where they were thumped with surprising ease in football sports betting 37-6. MSU quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for only 198 yards and the running game provided just 31 yards more on a pathetic 1.6 yards per carry. This was from a team that is averaging 31.3 points, 175.4 rushing yards and 252.1 passing yards per game this year.

Even with those impressive overall offensive numbers, the average winning margin for Sparty this year has been +11.3 points, which while normally good enough to cover most points spreads, is actually less that half of this inflated number. In fact, if we back out a 45-7 win over Northern Colorado out of the FCS, none of the seven MSU wins vs. FBS opponents this year have been by more that this 24 point spread!

When you factor in the very real letdown potential for this week, the chances of MSU covering this spot in football sports betting decrease even more.

Yes, the Golden Gophers have lost eight consecutive games since opening their season with a covering 24-17 road win at Middle Tennessee State out of the Sun Belt Conference. They even lost at home to an FCS school in South Dakota. That said; their 52-10 loss to Ohio State last week was the first time they lost by more than 24 points in any game this year, and Ohio State will do that to a lot of teams.

While Minnesota struggles to stop people, they can score points with their offense, averaging 22.8 points and 369.6 yards per game. Remember that the Gophers upset Sparty 42-34 last season, so they are quite capable of scoring against a demoralized defense in football sports betting Saturday afternoon.

NCAA Football Insider Tip : When you consider that Michigan State has not beaten any FBS team by more that 24 points all year and that the only game that Minnesota lost by more than 24 points was to an Ohio State team that is one of the very best in the country, this line would look like an overlay under normal circumstances.

When you add in the bitter disappointment of Michigan State losing its first game last week after an 8-0 start, the Golden Gophers become a more solid play.

Take Minnesota with the big points in football sports betting on Saturday.
