After five straight weeks of considerable success, the Florida State Seminoles faced their first truly disappointing loss against the North Carolina State Wolfpack last Thursday night on the road.

A fumble on the NCSU four-yard line by quarterback Christian Ponder gave the Noles their second loss of the season and their first conference setback. Now, rather than being in control of the conference, the Noles are on the short list to win their division, the ACC Atlantic.

They can move one step closer to that coveted championship if they can defeat the North Carolina Tar Heels this Saturday on home soil.

Football Sports Betting: What North Carolina Has To Do To Win

North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates has recorded nearly 2,000 passing yards and 12 touchdowns in eight games. Those aren’t record-breaking numbers by any stretch, but Yates has proven to be the key to UNC’s offense.

When he’s in a rhythm, he can throw for over 400 yards (against LSU on Sept. 4, he had 412 yards and three touchdowns). However, if he’s up against a strong defense, Yates can effectively be shut down (against Miami he had 140 yards and no touchdowns).

North Carolina offensive coordinator John Shoop has to put Yates in position to make plays, since he’s without his top two pass catchers for the rest of the season, Greg Little (out because of NCAA violations) and Zach Pianalto (out because of an injury suffered earlier in the season).

If North Carolina can throw short passes and set up manageable second- and third-down situations, it can move the ball and also keep the pigskin away from Florida State’s gifted athletic quarterback, Christian Ponder.

Football Sports Betting: What Florida State Has To Do To Win

The biggest story of this game will be the Seminoles’ ability to adjust to North Carolina’s offense. In the last few games the Noles’ defense has allowed long drives early in the game but has then adjusted to each offense it has seen.

What hurt Florida State against North Carolina State was not the fundamental Xs and Os, but the improvisational running ability of NC State quarterback Russell Wilson, who found lanes in which to scramble when passing plays broke down and Florida State blanketed receivers downfield.

Florida State’s linebackers are going to be hugely significant in this tilt because they’ll need to provide run support but also ensure that broken plays don’t turn into big plays for North Carolina.

Football Sports Betting: Outlook & Pick

On the road, it’s hard to see how Yates and the Carolina offense will have enough weapons to bother Florida State’s defense and make the ad-lib plays that Russell Wilson of North Carolina State used to flummox the Seminoles.

Florida State has the far better quarterback, and with home-field advantage thrown into the mix, that should be enough to give the Seminoles a comfortable double-digit victory in excess of the 10-point spread.

Football Sports Betting Pick: Florida State -10.5
