Football Odds – Offensive Packers Host Offensively Challenger Bills

September 18, 2010

The Green Bay Packers started their season with what they feel was an underwhelming win and Football Odds are that they will be looking for a better effort against an overmatched Buffalo Bills. It is a matchup of one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks against one of the NFL’s better secondaries.

BUFFALO BILLS (0-1) vs. GREEN BAY PACKERS (1-0)
Sunday, September 19, 1:00 PM ET
Lambeau Field
Green Bay, Wisconsin
Broadcast: CBS

Football Odds:

Buffalo: +13 (-110)
Green Bay: -13 (-110)

Total: 24 ½ points: Over (-110), Under (-110)

The Buffalo Bills defied the Football odds last week, not because they hung with the Miami Dolphins but because they did it with 168 yards of total offense. Buffalo’s season optimism will get a wakeup call in Week 2 against an elite NFL team, the Green Bay Packers.

Let’s be honest. We all knew that Trent Edwards would not be a strength for the Bills and he certainly did nothing last week to dissuade opinion. 18 completions in 34 attempts for 139 yards were poor even by his standards. Miami has a good defense, but nothing compared to the unit that Edwards will face this week in Green Bay.

What we thought would be the strength of the Buffalo offense fizzled and ultimately totally disappointed. The running back committee of Fred Jackson, Marshawn Lynch and CJ Spiller gained a whopping 50 yards total with highly touted Spiller gaining just six yards on seven carries. This week, the rushing attack faces a defense that gave up 150 yards to Philadelphia last week (most to Michael Vick). If the committee can’t get it going this week, the Bills could be in line for a high draft pick once again in 2011.

Buffalo’s defense looked good but they haven’t faced anything like the Green Bay offense. The secondary shut down Brandon Marshall last week and only allowed Miami 164 yards passing. To say that they will be tested this week is a colossal understatement.

Green Bay struggled a bit last week but Football odds are that they won’t let it happen again. This week, they will be forced to play without their solid 1200 yard rusher, Ryan Grant. Pressure will be on Brandon Jackson to pick up the slack as well as Aaron Rodgers who passed for just 188 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions last week.

Top to bottom, the Packers were disappointed with their performance. At home, they will be looking to prove to their fans why they are serious Title contenders. Look for Rodgers to put the shaky game behind him and fling the ball all over Lambeau. His stud receivers have a tough matchup against Buffalo’s secondary but there are simply too many weapons in the receiving game for the defensive backs to contend with.

Defensively, Clay Matthews was a machine last week. Football odds are that he will eclipse his 7 tackle, 2 sack and one forced fumble Week 1 effort. I will give the defense the benefit of the doubt and say that their average effort was a product of them not being prepared for what Michael Vick brought to the game.

Football Odds Outlook:

Buffalo is 5-11 ATS in their last 16 against teams with winning records, are 4-6 ATS outside their division but are a surprising 8-3 ATS in their last 11 on the road. Green Bay is 3-0-1 ATS in their last four home games and are 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 overall.

The Green Bay Packers know what the Buffalo Bills bring to this game offensively. Look for the Packers defense to stack the box and dare Trent Edwards to beat them. You know and I know that he won’t.

Football Odds Pick: Green Bay Packers -13
