The Golden Bears have struggled to a 5-4 record this season, including going .500 in the PAC-10 with three wins in six games. California will have the chance to play spoiler in their biggest game of the year Saturday however, in a match up pitting the PAC-10’s top-ranked offense from Oregon against the Golden Bears’ top-ranked defense. California is undefeated through four games at home this season, so something will have to give this weekend against undefeated Oregon.
Football Odds: What Oregon Will Have To Do To Win?
The Ducks will need five more strong performances from sophomore quarterback Darron Thomas to be able to call themselves national champions. Thomas is the centerpiece for an Oregon offense that ranks first in the nation on offense with an average of 54.7 points and 567.2 yards. Running back LaMichael James and his 6.8 average yards per carry will be relied on heavily as well down the stretch, as the sophomore leads the nation with 166.4 rushing yards per game and 18 touchdowns, including the three he scored in last week’s win over Washington. While the offense takes the spotlight for being the best in the country, the defense can’t be overlooked as the Ducks rank 13th in the nation overall, and will need another big effort on the road this weekend.
Football Odds: What California Will Have To Do Win?
The Golden Bears’ top-ranked defense in the PAC-10 will face its biggest test this weekend, and while they may be forced to bend against such a talented school, the pressure will be on not to break completely. California has gone 4-0 this year at home while limiting opponent to 34 points combined, with none of their four victories being clinched by any less than 28 points. The Golden Bears may need to be more aggressive on offense as well, where some unconventional plays may be the key to keeping the Oregon defense a step behind.
Football Odds: Outlook & Pick
The Ducks have never beaten California at Memorial Stadium with Jeff Tedford as the Golden Bears’ head coach, losing all three visits since he quit as Oregon’s offensive coordinator to make the move in 2002. Two of those three times the Ducks were ranked, and not once were they able to score more than 27 points. Tedford understands the intricacies to Oregon’s high-powered offense, and while he won’t be able to completely stop them and end their perfect season, the Golden Bears will do just enough to cover Saturday.
Football Odds Pick: California +19.5
