If you’re interested in the football betting odds, remember all of this:
– The coaches here are the guys who had the best regular season records in their respective conferences – Bill Belichick of the Patriots and Mike Smith of the Falcons. In other words, since they’re not going to be in the Super Bowl next week, these are two of the guys who are the most disappointed.
– This is the second time Belichick is coaching this game. He led the AFC in 1999, as a fill-in for Bil Parcells, when he was on the Jets’ staff. The AFC won that game, 23-10.
– Ten of the last eleven Pro Bowls have produced scores that were greater than 50 points. Last year’s game had 75 total points (41-34, AFC).
– With the over-under posted at 63.5 points in the football betting odds, perhaps it is useful to know that only one of the first 29 Pro Bowls since the merger; i.e., between the AFC and NFC, surpassed that total, and that seven of the last eleven meetings have gone over that figure.
– In the 40 post-merger Pro Bowls, each side has won 20 times.
– The AFC and NFC have both won the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl in the same season nine times.
– For purposes of protecting the quarterbacks, there is no blitzing in this game. That certainly hurts people like Cameron Wake of Miami, Terrell Suggs of Baltimore, Brian Orakpo of Washington and DeMarcus Ware of Dallas, as they were elected to the team as linebackers and have to line up that way. Keep in mind, those players are in the Pro Bowl primarily because of their prowess in rushing the quarterback. Perhaps this is something that impacts the total in the football betting odds.
– Defenses have to play a 4-3 alignment. So nose tackles like Jay Ratliff of Dallas, Vince Wilfork of New England, Kyle Williams of Buffalo and Haloti Ngata of Baltimore are affected by this.
– You can’t flood the field with wide receivers; in fact, a tight end has to be on the field at all times. This makes Jason Witten, Tony Gonzalez, Mercedes Lewis and Zach Miller a little more important.
– Peyton Manning has Reggie Wayne to throw to, and Mat Cassel has Dwayne Bowe; also Matt Ryan has Roddy White. Quarterbacks Michael Vick, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers have none of their wide receivers in the Pro Bowl.
– The Atlanta Falcons have the most players in this game, with nine. So if you thought they laid down for you as a favorite in the football betting odds against Green Bay, you probably won’t like them much here.
