Football Betting Lock – 49ers vs Falcons

October 3, 2010

The Football Betting gods were smiling down on the Falcons’ faithful last week as Garrett Hartley shanked a game-winning chip shot, giving Atlanta second life. Good teams only need one opportunity, and the Falcons seized it, as they won the ball game on their first possession in overtime. The win gave them the upper hand in the NFC South and some huge momentum going into their Week 4 contest versus the 49ers. Momentum is not something you’ll hear from San Francisco’s camp, unless they’re looking to buy some as this team has started out 0-3, which is the biggest shock of this young NFL season in many people’s opinion.

San Francisco 49ers (0-3) vs. Atlanta Falcons (2-1) (Georgia Dome – Atlanta, GA)

Sunday October 3 rd at 1 PM ET

TV: FOX

The 49ers’ Week 3 loss in Kansas City by a 31-10 count was the breaking point to some degree for this club as Head Coach Mike Singletary fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. I agree that something had to be done, and with Alex Smith’s struggles, it’s easy to single out a guy like Raye, but this team has more than just problems on offence.

Football Betting Spread:

49ers – PS +6 ½ (-110) ML +240

Falcons – PS -6 ½ (-110) ML -290

Total – 42 ½

San Francisco 49ers managed just 11 first downs and 251 yards of total offense on the day, committing their seventh turnover of the year in the process. But there are plenty of teams who have had their offensive struggles and have still managed success, the Bengals being a perfect example. The difference between those two teams though, other than the records, is that the Bengals defence is winning them some ball games.

This was a stop unit that was supposed to be one of the better in the league. Up to this point in the season they have been quite the opposite. Last Sunday they allowed a very suspect Chiefs offence to put up a staggering 457 yards. They made Matt Cassel look like Elway and the 192 yards on the ground from running backs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones was just the final slap in the face.

Don’t expect Atlanta Falcons to feel bad for them as the Falcons are going to use this as an opportunity to build off last week’s win in New Orleans. Matt Ryan has had himself a very impressive start to the season, throwing for 705 yards with five TD’s and only 1 pick, and the Georgia Dome is a place where this kid just does not lose. If you think I’m kidding, consider the fact that as a starter, he has gone 14-1 in that building and has won 10-straight games.

I don’t know what more you need to make a Football Betting pick on the Falcons, but until the 49ers show me they deserve any respect, I’ll bet against them every week this season.

Football Betting Prediction: Atlanta (-6 ½)
