Football Betting Doesn’t Get Tougher Than Handicapping TCU vs. Utah

November 6, 2010

Football betting doesn’t get any tougher than handicapping TCU vs. Utah on Nov. 6th.

The two undefeated teams will be battling for more than supremacy in the Mountain West Conference when the Horned Frogs travel to Utah to take on the Utes this Saturday. TCU is ranked #3 in the BCS and Utah is ranked #5 in the BCS. The team that wins this game could very well be in a position to leapfrog either Oregon at #1 or Auburn at #2 if one of those two teams stubs their toe from now until the end of the season.

That makes this game as big of a game as any in the history of either school.

NCAAF Betting Lines

TCU Horned Frogs -4 ½ -110 O 51 -110
Utah Utes +4 ½ -110 U 51 -110

The football betting trends favor the Utah Utes in this game.

  • The TCU Horned Frogs are 1 and 5 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring 40 points or more in their previous game.
  • The Home team is 4 and 1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
  • The Utah Utes are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
  • The Utah Utes are 6 and 1 ATS in their last 7 conference games.

Although a lot of trends favor the under, I don’t believe that going under the total in this game is the best NCAAF football betting wager to make.

To me, the best wager to make is on TCU -4 ½. I love Utah. Week in and week out they are #1 on my Top 10 NCAAF ATS list. Why? Because they are 6-1-1 ATS on the season. Come on, the Utes are awesome! But, they haven’t come close to facing the caliber of team that they face on Saturday.

Although TCU is only 5 and 4 ATS this season, the Horned Frogs are 3 and 1 ATS in their last 4 games. Not surprisingly, they’re also playing their best football of the season. TCU’s defense has been absolutely magical in it’s last 5 games. The Horned Frogs have outscored their opponents 189 to 16. I’m not making those numbers up. TCU beat Colorado State 27 to 0. They beat Wyoming 45 to 0. They beat BYU 31 to 3. They beat Air Force 38 to 7. Then, last Saturday, they squashed UNLV 48 to 6.

TCU’s D is ranked #1 in total yards, 217.3 per game, passing yards, 119 per game, and points allowed, 8.7 per game. The Horned Frogs’ D is ranked 9th against the rush when allowing 98.3 yards per game.

Utah’s exceptional offense, which averages over 45 points per game, and terrific defense, which gives up 14.1 points per game, gives them a shot in this one, but I can’t get myself to go against the Horned Frogs. TCU dominated Utah 55 to 28 in 2009. I don’t believe that the Horned Frogs will need 55 points in this game, but they might get it.

Utah’s D gives up over 100 yards per game on the ground on average. Last week, Air Force amassed 210 yards on the ground versus Utah. TCU averages 270 yards per game on the ground. The Horned Frogs should absolutely punish Utah’s front 7 with the rush on Saturday.

I just don’t see how the Horned Frogs don’t cover the college football betting spread in this game. Again, I love Utah, but TCU is just too good. They’re my pick in what should be the game of the week.
