Football Betting Advice – Miami vs Pittsburgh

September 23, 2010

Those seeking football betting advice know that the Miami Hurricanes were very mistake-prone in their last game, and they hope to rebound on Thursday night when they take on the Pittsburgh Panthers in action between Big East and ACC squads, that is slated to begin at 7:30 PM ET at Heinz Field (natural turf) in Pittsburgh. In the college football lines, Miami is listed as a 3.5-point road favorite, with the total on the game posted at 49.5 points. Our football betting advice for this game is based on those numbers.

Miami’s quarterback, Jacory Harris, would certainly like to take back a few of those throws he made in the game against Ohio State. The Hurricanes’ junior signal-caller was intercepted four times by the Buckeyes, and that was really the factor that led to the 12-point defeat (36-24). So, football betting advice is tough when you have a QB that will make gaffes like that, especially when the weather gets a little wet. Otherwise, the ‘Canes look like a squad that can do some damage, particularly on the special teams. They are currently ranked #1 in punt returns and #8 in kickoff returns, and although we know it is early in the season, we also know that if there’s one thing this program can do, it’s recruit great athletes. They could possibly break one or two against Pittsburgh.

Here are some college football betting trends that may influence our football betting advice on this game

  • Miami has won the last six meetings SU
  • Miami has covered four of the last six meetings
  • Miami has won four of the last six meetings SU as the road team

Pittsburgh has played one real game this year, and that was the opener, which was an overtime loss to nationally-ranked Utah. The jury on quarterback Tino Sunseri is still out; the sophomore, who threw only 17 passes last year, was 16 for 28 in the game, and threw a 44-yard TD pass to Jon Baldwin to bring the Panthers to within a field goal in the fourth quarter. Dion Lewis, who ran for 1799 yards as a freshman, is probably the best weapon on the field, and has not broken out yet in the first two games. Whether Miami, with a veteran front seven, can put the stops on Lewis is debatable. Last week Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor (113 yards on 20 carries) did the most damage on the ground.

Offering football betting advice on either of these teams is a little dicey.  Under Dave Wannstedt, who has compiled a 36-27 SU record at Pitt, the Panthers have usually been pretty decent, and sometimes even nationally-ranked, but have always seemed to fall below expectations. Sunseri is unproven, and Harris might be able to maneuver if the weather is agreeable, which is supposed to be the case. A key for Miami is that Pitt’s demon pass rusher, Greg Romeus, is out with a back injury and that could clear the way for Harris to have more time. In five of the last six meetings, Miami has outgained this opponent by at least 150 yards. Our football betting advice is to lay the points with Miami in the college football lines.
