Football Betting Advice – Southern Miss Could Use Receiving Star
October 2, 2010
Those seeking football betting advice know that Southern Miss is one of the favorites in Conference USA, but they could really use their receiving star as the Golden Eagles will play host to the Marshall Thundering Herd in conference action that begins at 8 PM ET at MM Roberts Stadium (artificial turf) in Hattiesburg, MS. In the college football lines, Southern Miss is a 9.5-point favorite, with the total posted at 53 points. It is based on those numbers that we will render our football betting advice.

Conference USA is not like the Big Ten or the SEC in there are not a lot of players on top teams who have realistic NFL aspirations. Southern Miss, however, has one of those players, and it’s receiver DeAndre Brown, who caught 47 passes for nine touchdowns last year and has the kind of classic size (6’6", 240 pounds) that the scouts tend to like. His presence certainly influences any football betting advice we offer on a game. Brown suffered an injury to his lower leg that prevented him from playing last week against Louisiana tech, in a game Southern Miss won but didn’t cover. It is likely that the decision on his availability won’t be made until close to game time on Saturday.
Here are some of the NCAAF betting trends as they impact our football betting advice on this game:
- Marshall has covered two of its last eight games
- Marshall has lost four of its last six games SU
- Marshall has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
- Marshall has played ten of its last 15 games UNDER the total
- Marshall has lost its last five road games SU
- Marshall has played eight of its last 12 road games UNDER the total
- Southern Miss has won 15 of its last 22 games SU
- Southern Miss has won eleven of its last 12 home games SU
- Southern Miss has won four of the last five meetings SU

What would appear to be important about Brown’s status for this game is that Marshall is rather porous in terms of its pass defense, allowing 67% completions so far. The Herd has actually been pretty feisty; off course, no online betting advice in the world would have predicted they’d be close to Ohio State in the season opener, and they weren’t. But they took West Virginia to overtime and were knotted up with Bowling Green before letting things get out of hand in the fourth quarter. The guy who let that get out of hand was Brian Anderson, who tossed four interceptions, and certainly there’s no way that he can do that against this team, in this road game. But his offensive line has demonstrated that it can keep him protected (just one sack allowed), so he’ll have half a chance. Southern Miss should have been able to pull away from sputtering Louisiana Tech last week, and one of the reasons was that they didn’t have Brown in tow. If they cannot access him this week, my football betting advice would be to take points with Marshall, the 9.5-point underdog in the college football lines.
JAY’S PLAY: MARSHALL +9.5 *
(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
