Football Betting – Will Brett Favre Suit Up for the Vikings?

December 10, 2010

Football bettors are reading the same old story again this week – will Brett Favre start the game for the Minnesota Vikings? After another injury last week, Favre will try to suit up against the New York Giants in NFL betting action that is set to begin at 1 PM ET at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

The Vikings are currently not a part of the league’s playoff picture, so the Giants are a three-point road favorite, with the total on the game posted at 43 points.

Here are some of the football betting trends as they impact our NFL prediction on this game:

· New York has covered eight of its last 23 games
· New York has won seven of its last nine games SU
· New York has played five of its last seven road games OVER the total

· Minnesota has played six of its last nine games OVER the total
· Minnesota has covered two of its last seven games
· Minnesota has played eight of its last 12 home games UNDER the total
· Minnesota has won 13 of its last 15 home games SU

Brett Favre has a sprained shoulder, which you can add to the plethora of ailments that have plagued him this year. Do we have all day to list everything that is bothering him? It’s a wonder the guy can even walk or talk right now.

Last week he got knocked out of the game against Buffalo, which Minnesota won 38-14. Football bettors watched Tarvaris Jackson come into the game in his place and pass for 187 yards with two touchdowns.

Jackson also threw three interceptions, an indication that ball control may not be so good for the Vikes, no matter who starts at quarterback, since Favre has 18 pickoffs to go with just ten TD passes.

Here are the head-to-head football betting trends on this game:

· Minnesota has won four of the last five meetings SU
· New York has covered four of the last five meetings as the home team

One thing you can almost guarantee is that Favre is going to try to get out there, and I think that this is at the point where vanity has taken over. Favre wants to keep his consecutive game streak alive, as it is approaching 200 games, and he is going into games when he really shouldn’t be there.

Of course, that hurts his team, and I hope he develops some awareness of it. There certainly are some football bettors who are aware of it, aren’t there? It may be too late for this week. As of this writing, Favre has not practiced with the team this week.

If he plays, he is going to facing a Giants pass rush that has knocked a bunch of quarterbacks out of games this year, including Matt Moore, Jay Cutler and Tony Romo. Yes, Favre is vulnerable, and I do not expect the Giants to take any prisoners as they go after him.

That’s because they have a chip on their shoulder about last year’s meeting, coming at the tail end of the season when the Giants were hurting in the secondary and getting steamrolled, and the Vikings ran up a 44-7 score on them (covering eight points in the football betting lines) that some of the New York players thought was a little uncalled for.

"I remember everything they did," defensive end Osi Umenyiora said. "The blowout, them trying to run up the score, the different things they did out there."

That sounds like a team that is not just looking to win, but to cover as well. Since they’ve gotten the running game straightened out a little, I’m expecting Eli Manning to have some help as he works with his patchwork receiving corps. We lay the points with the Giants, the three-point favorites in footbal betting odds for Sunday.

JAY’S PLAY: N.Y. GIANTS -3 ***
