The Titans had been very uncertain about who will be under center. Rusty Smith got his first NFL start last Sunday, and went 17 for 31 with three interceptions against Houston. Chris Simms, who was signed in April, arrested for possession of marijuana in July, and cut right before the regular season, is back on the roster but Jeff Fisher has ruled him out of the start. Kerry Collins, who missed the last two games, looks like he’ll actually be brought back to start this week. There is little question among football bettors that he would be going in before he was really ready to return. There is crisis elsewhere; offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger has been diagnosed with cancer and began chemotherapy treatments. He may or may not be on the sidelines for Sunday’s contest.
Here are some of the head-to-head football betting trends with regard to our NFL predictions:
· Four of the last five meetings have gone UNDER the total
· Tennessee has won four of the last five meetings SU
· Tennessee has won eight of the last 11 meetings SU as the home team
Tennessee’s defense and running game will no doubt have to carry the day. The stop unit gets pressure on opposing passers, no doubt (32 sacks) and there is Chris Johnson at running back, but Houston keyed on stopping Johnson first and foremost last week, and he netted only five yards. Jacksonville has shown some vulnerability to the run (4.3 ypc allowed), and football bettors know they have beaten only a downtrodden Dallas team and a then-winless Buffalo contingent on the road this season. The Jags, however, also have David Garrard, who has cooled down a bit over the last couple of games but is still 66% accurate.
Will the threat of Collins be enough to make the Jacksonville defense play honestly? The Jags have not been able to generate a big pass rush without Aaron Kampmann in the lineup, but maybe the concern shifts over to the Jacksonville offensive line, which has lost Eldon Britton for the season and is just getting Eugene Monroe back after a concussion. They allowed Garrard to get sacked four times last week, and the Titans have a potent pass rush (32 sacks). We’re figuring we’re better off on the "take" in this game, grabbing three points in the football betting line.
