Football Betting – People in Dallas Very Unhappy
November 7, 2010
Football betting followers know that the Dallas Cowboys are at the point now where they might as well be thinking about next year and a new coach, but people are very unhappy in Dallas, for sure. On Sunday night (8:20 PM ET on NBC) they will travel to Green Bay to play the Packers, who put forth a surprising defensive performance to shut out the Jets last week. In the football betting odds on this game, the Packers are an eight-point favorite, with the total on the game posted at 45.5 points.

Dallas has now lost four straight, both straight-up and in the football betting odds. The defense has given up 134 points in those games, and the defensive coordinator also happens to be the head coach: Wade Phillips. There is a tremendous public outcry for Phillips’ ouster, and there certainly is a great deal of justification for it. Jerry Jones has expressed that he is not interested in getting rid of Phillips, but he has also expressed that he has never been through such a disappointment. Jones hired Jason Garrett on his own as an offensive coordinator, so perhaps he would be an ideal candidate to step in and still offer some continuity, with Paul Pasqualoni taking over as defensive coordinator.
Making a start for the second straight week at quarterback is Jon Kitna, who came in when Tony Romo broke his collarbone. What Kitna brings to the table is the ability to throw for a lot of yards – in fact, he had more last week (379) than any other passer. But football bettors know that he will also throw a whole bunch of interceptions, and in his first start for the Cowboys he tossed four of them. The likelihood is that he’ll have to continue heaving it up, as Dallas has only 91 combined rushing yards the last two weeks. For what it’s worth, in six career games against the Packers, Kitna is just a 54% passer with nine interceptions.
Here are the head-to-head betting trends as they involve the football betting odds on this game:
- Dallas has won eleven of the last 14 meetings SU
- Eleven of the last 14 meetings have gone OVER the total
- Four of the last six meetings in Green Bay have gone OVER the total
- Green Bay has won and covered four of the last six meetings as the home team

It was painfully evident in the game against the Giants that this team was putting forth a half-hearted effort on defense. And it was alarming when David Garrard, the Jacksonville quarterback who threw four touchdowns against them last week, said that he sensed that the Cowboys quit in the game. Garrard isn’t the kind of guy to say those things for controversy’s sake.
Look – this is a rather large football betting number for banged-up Green Bay team to cover. But I don’t like to have a team that not only quits, and has even MORE reason to quit at this point, that has tuned out its coach, AND has a quarterback who turns over the ball to boot. Turnovers and easy opportunities for the other side give a team more reason to quit, and if the Cowboys didn’t put out against Jacksonville, when will it happen? I’m sure with a team of Dallas’ personnel that they are capable of putting in a great effort on any given day, but for purposes of football betting, I don’t know that I am interested in guessing what day that is going to be. So while it is not a big play, we’ll offer a mild recommendation on the Packers here.
