Football Betting – Is It a New Ballgame in Kansas City?
September 18, 2010
Those who engage in football betting might sense that it’s a new ballgame in Kansas City these days; is that the truth? The Chiefs upset the San Diego Chargers in the season’s opening week, and on Sunday they travel to play the Cleveland Browns, disappointing losers in their first contest, at Cleveland Browns Stadium (natural turf). Cleveland, which might be switching quarterbacks for this game, is listed as the two-point football betting favorite, with the total posted at 38.5 points.

The football betting odds might not change a whole lot because of the impending change the Browns are making at the quarterback position. Jake Delhomme, who threw 18 interceptions, many of which turned out to be disastrous, for Carolina last year, tossed two more in the opener, and of course they were instrumental in the Browns taking a come-from-ahead loss back to Cleveland. But Delhomme is not being yanked because of that; rather, he has an ankle injury and has not been practicing. It’s looking more like Seneca Wallace will get the call., Wallace is an undersized QB, but he takes advantage of his mobility, and in a stint as the starter for Seattle when Matt Hasselbeck a couple of years ago, he threw 11 TD’s with just three interceptions.
Kansas City broke out some of its speedy artillery last week in an upset of the Chargers. Jamaal Charles had a 56-yard TD run; Dexter McCluster returned a punt 94 yards for a touchdown, and Javier Arenas, like McCluster a second-round draft pick, had a 36-yard punt return where he was tackled by the punter. There was plenty of emotion, and an electric Arrowhead Stadium crowd, and the Chiefs responded. It doesn’t necessarily mean that Kansas City is ready for a Super Bowl run, but in the space of one week’s time, they have gone from +700 to +400 in the football betting odds to win the AFC West.
Here are some football betting trends as they impact the NFL odds on this game:
- Kansas City has lost 16 of its last 21 games SU
- Kansas City has played five of its last eight games OVER the total
- Kansas City has lost 16 of its last 20 road games SU
- Cleveland has lost 18 of its last 23 games SU
- Cleveland has won four of its last five games SU
- Cleveland has played four of its last six home games UNDER the total
- Cleveland has lost ten of its last 13 home games SU

We know what the Chiefs now possess on the return teams, but let’s not forget that the reigning master in that department is Josh Cribbs, who had kickoff returns of 103 and 100 yards against the Chiefs in last year’s meeting. He’s got to be dealt with, and the Kansas City defense, which could be without defensive end Tyson Jackson, had better be improved enough to corral Jerome Harrison, who rambled for 286 yards when these teams met last. As you can imagine, it was a wild one.
Anybody who is familiar with the idea of a "bounce" in horse racing might want to apply this to the Chiefs for football betting purposes this week. That is to say, Kansas City comes off such a high, with enough things in ll three phases of the game going right, that such a young, unaccomplished team might not be expected to perform near that level again. It’s not that the Browns are an especially attractive alternative, but they could be more attractive with the slippery Wallace, who will make KC’s stop unit pay extra attention. Let’s lay a couple of points with the Browns in NFL football betting for this Sunday.
