Fiesta Bowl Pits Undefeated Boise against Undefeated TCU

January 4, 2010

Two undefeated teams from two crap infested conferences will be taking on each other for king of poop mountain in the Fiesta Bowl. If I sound pissed throughout this college bowl free pick preview, it’s because pitting Boise against TCU does nothing to validate either team. Both programs have been clamoring for national credibility and neither will achieve a damn thing by playing against each other.

What the Sugar Bowl matchup between the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Florida Gators proved is that Cincinnati isn’t deserving of its third ranking in the BCS, and that it can’t hold a candle to the big league programs across the country.

That venting being put aside, there’s a reason that TCU was able to notch a fourth place ranking in the BCS. It’s simply a better football team that’s had to face some stiffer competition overall. The Horned Frogs (whatever that is) beat Clemson, Air Force, Virginia and Texas State to open the season and then had a handful of easy matchups for the final two months of college football betting. During that stretch against sub-par opponents, TCU went 6-1 ATS in their final seven games.

TCU’s offense ranks in the fourth overall in the nation, and they beat up on scrub teams to the tune of 40.7 points per game. They were led by a strong rushing attack spearheaded by Joseph Turner and Matthew Tucker who combined for 244 touches, 1,399 yards and 19 touchdowns. Boise State allows 126.8 yards against on the ground, and they have a decisive defensive disadvantage in this game.

Their defense gave up an average of 17.7 points per game ranking them 16th in the nation. They showed some serious lapses during the season allowing 33 points against Nevada, 35 against Louisiana Tech and 34 points against Fresno State. It’s a stark contrast compared to the grizzly discipline from the Horned Frogs.

Boise State Broncos (13-0) vs. TCU Horned Frogs (12-0)

Monday, January 4th
University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale — 8:10pm EST

NCAAF Betting Line: TCU -7 (53.5)

The Broncos have relied on a devout passing attack from Heisman bubble prospect Kellen Moore. Averaging 44.2 points per game and 266.0 passing yards per game made Boise the top ranked offense in the country, but getting past TCU’s defense is going to be tough. They allow just 152.8 yards through the air, and 80.5 yards on the ground.

Not too many years ago, the Broncos won what many consider the greatest bowl game ever when they needed overtime to beat Oklahoma 43-42 using some trickery. The problem for them is that they’ve been outed as a second-tier team and they’ve shifted primarily to a passing attack that could get derailed by an extremely dangerous TCU secondary. Let’s also consider that the Frogs’ front-seven is a stiff collection of dynamic and terrorizing backfield busters.

In a game that should rightfully put one team in a higher college betting echelon, TCU will get the win decisively as this game smashes the TOTAL. Whether the win gets TCU respect remains to be seen.
