Favre Soap Opera Continues as Brett Says, “I’ll Play If Healthy”
August 4, 2010
And so…it begins again. The Brett Favre soap opera continued once again today as Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, contacted the NFL Network and stated that Brett Favre “would play for the Minnesota Vikings” if healthy enough to do so. I guess, the rumors that came out yesterday about Favre’s retirement was nothing but…rumors.
I’m beginning to feel that the NFL should air Vikings’ games on the E! Network this year instead of on FOX or ESPN. Favre has become somewhat of a, well, brilliant joke. Sort of like the Kardashians? Or, Holly from Holly’s World?

But while Favre is sort of a funny joke, the Vikings are a sad joke. It’s apparent that there are two things going on. First, Favre’s ankle isn’t healed yet and most of his body probably does hurt all of the time. Second, Favre is weighing whether or not taking more punishment on his destroyed body is worth it for $20 million with $16 million guaranteed.
How does that make the Minnesota Vikings the sad joke in this situation? Because Brett’s not going to stop there. He’s going to wait, he’s going to see, he’s going to bargain for $20 million guaranteed with $5 to $10 more mil in incentives. And the Vikings are going to cave in. Already, Bus Cook is probably on the phone with Vikings’ brass wondering exactly how much Brett can get out of those fools.
What Cook and Favre are doing is on par with what happens in boxing where fighters routinely hold their sports, and their fans, hostage. Brett Favre is holding the Vikings and the City of Minnesota hostage with his selfish “Will I or won’t I?” mantra. He’s no better than Manny Pacquiao’s trainer, Bob Arum, who decided to start rumors that the fight was on between his guy and Floyd Mayweather Jr. to try and force Floyd’s hand. Or, Floyd pretending that he wants to fight Pacquiao in order to get more money.
At least in boxing it’s an individual sport. Bus Cook and Brett Favre are using the Minnesota Vikings, heck, the players on the Viking’s roster, to get more money out of the Twin Cities’ beloved team. That’s all this is.
And the Vikings are letting Favre do it. If NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wants to help his league, then he needs to step in right away and tell both the Vikings, Cook and Favre to say nothing at all about this situation until a final decision has been made.
If Favre wants to regain the integrity that he has lost to so many football fans and possibly to some of his fellow teammates, then if he decides to come back, he will play for less than what the Vikings have suddenly offered him. He won’t take any more money than what the two sides had agreed upon before this ridiculousness occurred. Otherwise, all of Brett’s talk about “loving this game” will mean absolutely nothing.
But if Favre does come back, and if he does take the money and this whole “I’m retiring” thing proves to be a sham once again, then those who should worry will be the NFL and its fans.
Favre will have set a terrible precedent. The old cliché that the “inmates don’t run the asylum” used to hold true in organized sports. Well, Brett is one inmate who’s decided that he should have the right to run the asylum.
And if the asylum that is the Minnesota Vikings lets him do it than it could be to the detriment of the entire NFL.
Did any Jets’ players receive that text about Darrelle Revis going to play in Canada? Just wondering…
