When you bet on NFL games, divisional match-ups provide some of the most exciting and intense games of the season. This contest has special intrigue as Vikings quarterback Brett Favre returns to Lambeau Field to face his former team the Green Bay Packers. Favre has announced that this will be his last game at Lambeau, unless these teams were to meet in the playoffs. Not likely at this point, as both have underachieved thus far with Green Bay (3-3) suffering back to back overtime losses and Minnesota (2-3) still trying to find the offensive assault that was so productive last season.
The Vikings are winless on the road this season, but have beaten the Packers three-straight times. Favre led the Vikings to a pair of wins over the Packers last season 30-23 and 38-26 as a underdog at Lambeau Field. A bet on NFL favorite, Favre has not performed up to his standards this season. The ‘Ol Wrangler has thrown seven interceptions to just six touchdowns while averaging 195 yards per game passing. The running game is productive again with Adrian Peterson leading a ground game averaging 124 yards per game and 4.5 yards per rush overall, but still below last years strong running stats.
The Packers lost as a bet on NFL favorite last week, and for the second-straight game they lost in overtime. The Packers were a bruised and battered team heading into the home contest against Miami last week, and the Dolphins were in a favorable spot off a bye and taking on a team lacking players and not healthy. Green Bay star linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring) missed last week’s contest but the NFL’s leader in sacks and backfield pressure player will be ready for the Vikings Sunday. Run-stopping defensive end Ryan Pickett (ankle) also missed last weeks game against Miami and is upgraded to questionable this week. The Packers have a streak of 19-straight games holding opponents under 100 yards rushing; the best active streak in the league.
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rogers was a bet on NFL favorite heading into this season and he’s admitted he’s not performed or played near his best. Rogers and the Packers offense has struggled the past two games on third down, converting just 5 of 26 chances. Rogers was sacked eight and six times in the two games against the Vikings last season and the Packers were unable to sack Favre even one time in two meetings. However, Rogers still passed for 261 and 342 yards in those two losses and he has a solid set of receivers and is one of the best pocket passers in the league while throwing for 257 yards per game and a solid 7.7 yards per pass play.
NFL Insider Tip: Minnesota big play receiver and return specialist Percy Harvin has been downgraded on the injury report, so check his status at game time as well if you decide you want to bet on this Sunday night thriller.
Still, we side with the Vikings who in this spot who enter the much healthier of the two squads. Favre has now fallen under the prime time lights in both bet on NFL spots this season, but don’t look for the third time to be the charm; especially against the squad that didn’t care if the door hit him in the behind on his way out of Green Bay.
My NFL Predictions: Minnesota Vikings (+2.5) -105
