European Tour – Robert Rock Poised for Estoril Open de Portugal Victory

June 14, 2010

Chris Wood is the solid +900 favorite in the golf sportsbook to win this week’s European Tour Tournament, the Estoril Open De Portugal.

Wood is coming off of a 3 over at the Celtic Manor Wales Open. He finished 18 strokes off of winner Graeme McDowell. Wood is going to have to turn it around in this tournament in order to win.

That makes him an underlay in the golf sportsbook at the odds. Who is the best bet to win the Estoril Open de Portugal?

Estoril Open de Portugal To Win

Best Golf Bet A: Robert Rock +1500

Rock has been exceptional in his last 2 tournaments. He’s done about as well as anybody would have expected him to do considering the golfers he’s been up against. His 5th place finish at the Madrid Masters could have been written off as Rock getting lucky, but he followed it up with a 4th place finish at the Celtic Manor Wales Open meaning that, if anything, he’s sitting on a victory. This is the perfect field for Rock to secure that victory. I believe he’s the best bet in the golf sportsbook to win the Estoril Open de Portugal.

Best Golf Bet B: James Donaldson +1500

He’s been peppering some very good finishes with some awful ones. For instance, he finished 10th at the Open de Espana and then followed it up with a 34th place finish at the BMW PGA Championship. He finished 6th at the Madrid Masters and then 46th last week at the Celtic Manor Wales Open. He should bounce back with another Top 10 finish this week. I’m hoping that because of the field he’s facing, there are no Luke Donald’s or Graeme McDowell’s in this group, Donaldson could actually hoist the trophy at the end of the tournament.

Worst Golf Wager: Chris Wood +900

He’s the only golfer in the field going off at less than double-digit golf betting odds. Yes, he had a nice string where he finished 3rd, 5th and 6th, but his 46th place finish at the Celtic Manor Wales Open was terrible. The thing with Wood is that once he gets bad, he can stay bad for a while. He finished 33rd, 88th, 83rd, and 37th in 4 straight tournaments before finishing 3rd at the BMW Italian Open to start his string of 3 straight tournaments finished in the Top 10.

Best Underdog Golf Bet: Darren Clarke +3000

Clarke hasn’t recorded a top 30 finish, much less a top 10 finish, since February earlier this year. He’s recorded 2 finishes worse than 100 out of 7 tournaments played since that 8th place finish at the Avantha Masters. Why do I have faith in him this week? Because he’s too good of a golfer to keep playing so badly. He’s going to get the swing back and I believe that it happens in this tournament. Last week at the Celtic Manor Wales Open, Clarke started out strong shooting a 69 first round and 71 second round. He finished up with two 73s but that tells me he worked out a lot of the kinks that led to the 129th place finish at the BMW PGA Championship.
