In Philadelphia, the post-Donovan McNabb era got off to a rocky start on Sunday, with a 27-20 loss to Green Bay. It got even more rocky with the departure of starting quarterback Kevin Kolb, who left before halftime with a concussion. It remains uncertain if he’ll be able to play this weekend.

However, for those looking to bet on football this weekend, it may be a blessing in disguise. That’s because when Kolb went down with injury he was struggling, and was replaced by veteran Michael Vick. While Vick may not be the player he was five or six years ago, he’s still pretty darn good, as he threw for 175 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another 103 yards as well. The left-handed quarterback almost singlehandedly got Philadelphia back in their game against Green Bay, before ultimately losing by a touchdown.

Speaking of quarterback woes, the Lions have one of their own. Not only did they lose in controversial fashion over the weekend, but they also lost quarterback Matt Stafford for up to half the season with a shoulder injury. In his place stepped Shaun Hill, who was commendable even in defeat.

In Sunday’s loss, Hill threw for 88 yards on nine completions, and it was his late game pass to Calvin Johnson that was thought to be the game winner. Of course the call ended up getting overturned, but there did appear to be a bright spot from the loss: The Lions were actually competitive in that game, and might be good this year!

So with that in mind, as you get ready to bet on football this weekend, which team should be your pick? We’re going to go off the radar and taking the Lions.

What many bettors are quick to forget, is that as good as Vick looked against Green Bay last weekend, it was a bit of a mirage. Remember, the Packers prepared for the pocket passing of Kolb all week, as they got set for that game. With a full seven days to get ready for Vick, there’s no way he’s rushing for anywhere close to 100 yards against Detroit this Sunday.

At the same time, the Lions really might be a good football team this year.

Remember, they lost by just five points on the road, and truthfully could’ve and probably should have beaten the Bears on Sunday. While it’d be quick to dismiss that tight ball game as a fluke, don’t. Detroit has skill on offense and defense.

When getting ready to bet on football this weekend, don’t take any chances and go with the surest wager on the board. Beware of the home underdog, and take the Lions giving four points in Detroit this weekend.

The Pick: Detroit +4
