Talk about a wakeup call! Losing to James Madison the week after it fell to Boise State might just have been exactly the slap across the face head coach Frank Beamer’s squad needed to get the Hokies engine firing on all cylinders! Since that point, the Hokies have scored impressive victories over East Carolina, Boston College, NC State, Central Michigan, and Wake forest.
The combined aggregate score in those five college football picks battles was VTECH 206 Opponent 99. The average margin of victory during that stretch has been 21.4 PPG, but they’ve pounded their L/2 opponents by a combined 27.5 PPG which is almost exactly the amount of points oddsmakers are forcing them to lay in this afternoon’s contest against the Dookies.
Now, head coach David Cutcliffe’s squad played off a bye last week and gave the Miami Hurricanes a stiffer challenge than the closing pointspread suggested. They went off the board as 16-point home underdogs after being bought down from the opener of +19.5. Duke was dealing with a Canes outfit that just got their hearts ripped out on a national stage against the in-state rival Florida State Seminoles.
Randy Shannon hasn’t shown the ability to get his teams up for games like that, but the same can’t and won’t be said about Beamer who’s coached his club to decisive victories in four of their L/5 contests.
This Duke outfit is almost a carbon copy of last week’s opponent, Wake Forest, whose offense is middle of the road backed by a simply atrocious defense.
Hokies signal caller Tyrod Taylor is in the midst of his best season ever completing 62.4 percent of his passes for 1322 yards to go along with an impressive TD/INT ratio of 12/3.
Oh yeah, he’s also the team’s leading rusher going off for 480 yards and three scores.
With Duke’s stop unit ranked 101st in yards allowed (434.5 YPG) and 112th in points allowed (37.8 PPG), the Hokies look destined to having yet another solid offensive showing.
It could help lead them to their sixth straight college football picks victory.
NCAA Football Insider Tip: With the bye scheduled for next week, it’s possible the Hokies could just go through the motions in this one as it looks to remain healthy going into the off week. After playing in what looks to be two different seasons to start the year, I can’t help but think the Hokies want this game over and done with as soon as possible to get some much needed time off.
On top of that, the Blue Devils have given them a run for their money in the L/2 meetings falling 34-26 as 17-point home underdogs last year, and only losing by a 14-3 final tally as 14.5-point Lane Stadium underdogs in 2008.
Duke has gone a solid 8-5 ATS when playing against +.500 teams the L/3 seasons, and they’re getting a boatload of points once again this week. VTECH is still a pretty banged up squad. I can see them coming out like gangbusters early, only to take their foot off the gas pedal in the second half to comfortably allow Sean Renfree and the Duke passing game to become winning college football picks by kicking in the backdoor. It won’t be a popular selection, but take as many points as you can with the Dookies in this divisional match-up!
