Dubai Desert Classic – Group Golf Betting

February 10, 2011

Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are all in the same group in the 72-hole group golf betting category in the sportsbook for this week’s Dubai Desert Classic. Will Tiger carry red, white and blue to victory in Group A?

Below is a preview, and pick, from each one of the four groups for this week’s European Tour tournament.

Golf: Dubai Desert Classic

Where: Dubai, United Arab Emirates

When: Feb. 10th thru Feb. 13th

Par/Yardage: par 72, 7,301 yards

TV: Golf Channel

Group A: Martin Kaymer +220, Tiger Woods +250, Rory McIlroy +260, Lee Westwood +400, Alvaro Quiros +600

Analysis: There isn’t a huge difference in the online golf sportsbook odds between Kaymer, El Tigre and Rory. What it means is that the pick has to be Westwood to win this group. At +400, Lee represents the most value.

Sure, he’s been terrible so far in 2011 but he tied Miguel Angel Jimenez at -11 in this tournament last year before losing the trophy in a playoff. Lee’s the pick because the odds differences between the top 3 and Westwood are just too great.

Pick: Lee Westwood

Group B: Edorado Molinari +200, Miguel Angel Jimenez +300, Sergio Garcia +350, Henrik Stenson +350, Ross Fisher +350

Analysis: Edoardo’s getting a lot of love in the sports book versus the rest of this crew. Anybody in this crew can win it, except maybe Garcia who should bounce in a bad way off of his 9th place finish at the Qatar Masters last week. I’m going with Miguel Angel who won the 2010 Dubai Desert Classic last year and should play better this week than he did last week in Qatar when he finished 74th.

Pick: Miguel Angel Jimenez

Group C: Peter Hanson +220, Matteo Mannassero +250, Richard Green +350, Thongchai Jaidee +350, Stephen Gallacher +400

Analysis: There’s a big golf odds difference between Hanson and Mannassero and Green, Jaidee and Gallacher. Out of the three underdogs in this group, Jaidee is the one to back because he almost got himself into the Jimenez/Westwood playoff at the 2010 Dubai Desert Classic when shooting a 10-under 278.

Thongchai also improved to score a 19th place finish at the Qatar Masters in his last tournament played.

Pick: Thongchai Jaidee

Group D: Seung-Yul Noh +200, Alexander Noren +300, Thomas Aiken +400, Darren Clarke +350, Soren Hansen +250

Analysis: Noh’s 1-over, 44th place, finish at the Dubai Desert Classic last year wasn’t overly impressive, but the young Korean does manage to come up with big tournaments.

He finished 9th at the Dubai World Championship last fall and 6th at the Volvo Golf Champions last month. He did produce a 96th place finish at the Qatar Masters last week, but all that means is that he improves big time this week.

Pick: Seung-Yul Noh
