Del Mar’s 6th Should Provide One of the Racebook’s Best Bets on Wednesday
August 4, 2010
Del Mar Racetrack resumes racing on Wednesday, August 4th, with the best bet to make in the racebook occurring in the 6th.
Although the featured race on the card, the Graduation Stakes, which goes off as Race 7, could provide one or two overlays, Race 6 should provide the best overlay on which to make a horse racing bet.

1-Hughesy- – 5/1 morning line odds
This $400,000 son of Unbridled’s Song broke his maiden going 1 1/8th miles over Santa Anita’s turf course. Then, in his next start, going off as the $2.20 to the dollar favorite, Hughesy got off slow, went three wide, and just couldn’t do enough to get to Magistrate and Shediak. Hughesy broke from the 9 hole that day and jockey Rafael Bejarano took him directly to the rail to save ground. Now, Hughesy gets to break from the 3 hole, is reunited with jockey David Flores who rode him to his maiden victory, and has enough speed to stay within 3 to 4 lengths of the front-runners. Not only that, but trainer Richard Mandella takes his time developing horses. The fact that Hughesy busted a great work on July 30th, 5 furlongs in :59 and 1, means that Mandella’s ready to go for the money with him. He’s the equine that deserves to be the horse racing bet to win in Wednesday’s 6th.
3-Pack Your Bags – - 9/2 morning line odds
Jockey Rafael Bejarano jumps aboard this turf sprinting star on the stretch out in tomorrow’s 6th race. Bejarano has guided Pack Your Bags to 2 victories and a second in his last three races. The stretch out shouldn’t bother him all that much and Bejarano is a master at gauging pace. That’s especially true since Rafael won’t have to use any tricks to get this fella to the rail because he breaks form the 2 hole. Pack Your Bags could get a dream trip tracking Derive all the way to the top of the stretch and then taking over before the 1/8th pole.
10-Bring It Home – - 5/1 morning line odds
I’ve got a soft spot for Bring It Home because the horse was sired by the brilliant Came Home and is trained by Paco Gonzalez, the man who saddled one of California’s greatest horses, Free House. Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m automatically betting on Bring It Home to win. Bring It Home has won only 1 race out of 14 tries. The horse has, however, finished second 4 times and third 6 times. Jockey Martin Garcia has cooled off after an awesome Hollywood Park meet although he did give Lookin’ At Lucky a perfect ride in the Haskell Invitational this past Sunday. Breaking from the 10 hole will not help this guy’s cause. Oh, well, a 3rd place finish could make Bring It Home a $100,000 winning horse. That’s not too shabby for a horse that’s only won once in his life.
Horse Wagering Strategy
I’m betting on Hughesy to win. I’m going to go ahead and play an exacta keying Hughesy over Bring It Home and Pack Your Bags. I will reverse for less.
I’m going to bet a trifecta keying Hughesy, Pack Your Bags over Hughesy, Pack Your Bags, 5-Deputy Max, Bring It Home, over 2-Derive, Hughesy, Pack Your Bags, 5-Deputy Max, 6-Shediak, Bring It Home.
Good luck!
