Deep South College Football Matchup: Georgia travels to Arkansas

September 19, 2009

Georgia Bulldogs @ Arkansas Razorbacks

Saturday, September 19 – Razorback Stadium – 7:45 PM ET

Line: Arkansas -1.5, O/U 54

Georgia: The Week That Was

The Georgia Bulldogs managed to bounce back after a tough opening loss to Oklahoma State but they weren’t exactly impressive. The Bulldogs gave up 37 points to South Carolina, who is supposed to have a very sluggish offense.

Making matters worse is the fact that Oklahoma State lost at home to Houston, which makes Georgia’s loss to the Cowboys look even worse.

This is clearly a rebuilding year for Mark Richt’s boys. Quarterback Joe Cox is a decent passer but nothing more and the offense really has only one big playmaker: wideout A.J. Green.

On defense, the Bulldogs are middle of the pack SEC defense.

Arkansas: The Week That Was

The Arkansas Razorbacks had the week off to prepare for their contest against Georgia, which is exactly what they needed. With the Bulldogs visiting, this could be the biggest game in the Bobby Petrino era at Arkansas. A win in this contest could make the statement that Arkansas is back in business in the SEC.

Regardless of the outcome, it’s fairly clear that this game will set the tone for the rest of the Razorbacks season.

Arkansas is in much better shape for this game this year than they were last time around. Not only are they more healthy but they are far more experienced.

The Week That Is:

Georgia is down right now, so what better time for the Razorbacks to kick them and get a big win?

This is not the same Georgia squad from last year and clearly, they are lacking a lot of punch.

On defense, the Bulldogs have forced just one turnover and have just two sacks to start the season. Those are horrible numbers for what was considered a solid SEC defense. This defense gave up 37 points to a disjointed South Carolina team, which means Arkansas should be able to move the ball rather easily as well.

South Carolina passed for 313 yards last week, which means Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett should also have a good day.

On defense, the main key will be for the Razorbacks to do a good job of tackling and keep everything in front of them. Georgia was outgained last week but because of big plays, ended up with the win. If Arkansas can limit them this week, this could be a rather easy win.

Arkansas is a growing program so look for them to be a little tight in this big contest but once they relax, they’ll take control.

Pick: Arkansas -1.5
