Colts Putting Playoff Lives On NFL Sportsbook Betting Line Against Titans

January 2, 2011

The Indianapolis Colts have been a foregone conclusion for the AFC playoff picture for the past eight years, and are heavy favorites in the NFL sportsbook as we make our final turn towards the post season. They’ll host the bumbling Tennessee Titans at home, who would love nothing more than to put a dent in the Colts season by serving them a loss.

Indianapolis can earn their ninth consecutive playoff berth by winning at home on Sunday. They can also sneak in to the playoffs if the Jaguars lose to Houston, which is more than likely considering that the team won’t have David Garrard or Maurice Jones-Drew in the lineup. If Kansas City somehow loses to Oakland, the Colts can get as high as third in the AFC playoff picture.

For the most part, the number on this game is a little too high for my liking. One thing I do like about the odds on the Colts in the NFL sportsbook this weekend is that Joseph Addai is back. He may not be an exceptional back, but he’s great at blocking, establishing a rushing game and offering Peyton Manning a safety valve in short dump passes.

Tennessee Titans (6-9) vs. Indianapolis Colts (9-6)

Sunday, January 2nd — Lucas Oil Stadium — 4:15pm EST

NFL Sportsbook Betting Line: Indianapolis -10.0 (48.0)

A balanced attack from Indy is essentially what you’ll be betting on, but the Tennessee Titans can explode offensively in their own right. Believe it or not but Kerry Collins has been around long enough to throw 40,000 yards in the NFL which makes him only the 12th player to do so in history.

The Titans have fallen off track this year after a very promising 2008 and what could have been a great 2009. Unfortunately, all the trends lean away from them in this game. They’re just 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games when visiting Indianapolis. On top of that, what makes this NFL sportsbook betting line so high is that they’re just 1-4 SU and ATS in their past 5 road games.

The other part that makes Tennessee a questionable play is how this team responds to Jeff Fisher. Vince Young split the locker room with his temper tantrum, and while us old schoolers think he’s a bum, Fisher’s career in Tennessee has been thrown in to question. The team hasn’t really responded to his iron fest even though he largely deserves the respect of the players.

That intangible, coupled with their horrific metrics on the road against Indianapolis, make Tennessee a terrible take in the NFL sportsbook this weekend.

You’ll be flooded with conjecture if the Colts fail to make the playoffs, but this team has been in playoff mode for the past three weeks and have simply been finding ways to win like a championship team should. That’s why you shouldn’t shy away from the Colts in the NFL sportsbook either.
