College Hoops Odds – Aztecs Look To Rebound In Final Road Contest

March 2, 2011

College hoops odds makers know that after an 80-67 loss at home to the No. 7 BYU Cougars, the No. 9 San Diego State Aztecs will try to rebound on the road when they take on the Wyoming Cowboys. The Aztecs had strung together seven straight wins before falling to BYU for the second time this season, but are now no longer in control of their own Mountain West destiny.

Broadcast: The Mountain
College Hoops Odds: San Diego State -11.5

That’s because they are now a game back of the Cougars for the conference lead with two to play, and neither against the current leaders. All San Diego State can do now is win out, beginning with their matchup against a Cowboys’ team that has split their last four games after losing eight in a row.

College Hoops Odds: What San Diego State Will Have To Do To Win

San Diego State will win this game if they can stick to their gameplan and not be too overwhelmed by a second straight loss to the Cougars. BYU proved itself the better team by sweeping the season series, which will likely determine the MWC, and now it’s up to the Aztecs to pick up the pieces and finish strong. Head coach Steve Fisher is confident that his team will bounce back, and the fact that they are taking on one of the worst teams in the conference should help. San Diego State’s perimeter defense was its biggest weakness against the Cougars, as they allowed 14 three-point shots for a season-high 80 points against. That number is 20.6 more than their conference-leading average, and their defense should be better against Wyoming.

College Hoops Odds: What Wyoming Will Have To Do To Win

The Cowboys will win this game if the Aztecs’ suffer an unprecedented meltdown defensively. Wyoming has struggled all year on offense, and have lost 16 straight games against ranked opponents. The Cowboys were blown away by UNLV 90-77 on Saturday, their 10th loss in 12 games, and it won’t get any prettier against an Aztecs’ team that blew them away in their first meeting of the year. Wyoming was blown away 95-57 in a game that they conceded a 14-0 lead top open the first half and never came close after. Despite some good stuff from Desmar Jackson the Cowboys haven’t done enough this year to think that they are ready to play with the big boys just yet.

College Hoops Odds: Outlook & Pick

The Aztecs bullied Wyoming around the first time these MWC teams met, and there is little reason to think that it won’t happen again in the rematch. San Diego State was humbled by a second straight loss to BYU, and will be looking to bounce back with another statement win.

College Hoops Odds Pick: San Diego State -12.5
