Okay, we can be realistic about the Cincinnati season thus far. The Bearcats did not have the toughest road to a 15-0 record, as the best team they had to face was unranked. However, that was Xavier, who by this time is the more established basketball program instead of the upstart, and that 20-point win in the "Crosstown Shootout" meant a great deal. But when facing ranked opposition for the first time, Cincy fell by double digits to Villanova, which means that it did not cover in college hoops betting. At the moment, Cincinnati is clinging to the #25 spot in the Associated Press poll, and if they do not win at the Carrier Dome, they will probably be dropped. Hey, this is a tough business – you’ve got to beat somebody to stay in there.
Syracuse has pretty much had its way. The Orange has demonstrated that it can win the close games (like the 53-50 win over Michigan or the five-point road win over Seton Hall) and can put some distance between themselves and good teams too, as they displayed in double-digit wins over Michigan State and Notre Dame. So many would argue that they are right where they should be, and that is not a bad accomplishment for Jim Boeheim and his staff, especially after losing a high draft choice like Wesley Johnson. Syracuse has exceeded the expectations of most, which is why it’s kind off odd that it has covered just four times in the the 12 games that have been posted in college hoops betting.
Certainly we don’t mind taking a long look at the more "proven" team here, especially as we are now into conference play. Syracuse has suffocated a better quality of opponent, holding teams to 37%, and Cincinnati gave up 72 points to Villanova, and that is 16 points above their average. That loss deprived us of getting the most value if we choose to go with Syracuse in the college hoops betting odds, because the Orange will be laying double digits in all likelihood. At the same time, Mick Cronin’s team is very hard-nosed, gives up just 38% themselves, and won;t be giving the ball up gratuitously (only 11.2 turnovers a game). We will look for Cincinnati to keep this one close till the waning moments, and that means grab points in college hoops betting.
