College Football: The Big Games for Week 7
October 12, 2009
Trojans Take on Irish and The Red River Shoot-Out This Week’s Highlights
The USC Trojans take a trip to South Bend, Indiana to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a game that had much more allure for NCAA bettors before the season started. Now that USC has lost to Washington and Notre Dame has lost to Michigan, two unranked teams Trojan and Irish fans, the shine is off this yearly rivalry game.
USC no doubt is going to be a huge favorite in the college football sportsbook and no doubt should easily cover the betting spread. The Trojans look too tough for the Irish who are 4 and 1 straight-up but 1 and 4 ATS. Unless the Trojans play down to the competition, which they can do at times, the Irish should be looking at their second loss in 2009.
Bradford and Oklahoma Look for Repeat against McCoy and Texas
Two of the top quarterbacks in college football, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy, take Oklahoma and Texas respectively into the annual Red River Shoot-out between the Sooners and the Longhorns. Last year, McCoy led Texas to a 45 to 35 victory over the Sooners and Texas looked to be on their way to the Big 12 Championship and then the BCS Championship, but a stumble against Texas Tech took them out of the Big 12 Championship Game.
Texas will be looking to once again beat their top rival in the Big 12 South, already having beaten Texas Tech, and will pull out all of the stops to do it. The NCAA football odds no doubt will favor Texas in this game even though Bradford is back for Oklahoma. Don’t expect anything more than a 6 ½ point wagering spread, though, because Oklahoma has a defense that can stop McCoy and Texas and Texas’s defense has shown a lack of focus at times, giving up 14 points to Colorado and 24 to Texas Tech.
This is going to be a good game for both NCAA gamblers to watch and to wager on!
Cincinnati vs. South Florida on Thursday Could Decide Big East Title
Cincinnati is undefeated and ranked in the Top 10 in most NCAA Power Rankings while the South Florida Bulls are undefeated and ranked in the Top 25 in most NCAA Power Rankings. Cincinnati’s offense has been downright ridiculous at times, putting up 45 against Rutgers in Week 1 and 70 against Southeast Missouri State in Week 2, but the Bearcats’ defense hasn’t been overly spectacular when Oregon State to put up 18 and Fresno State to put up 20 recently.
South Florida has been very impressive in racking up their 5 and 0 record straight-up. They beat Florida State as 14 point underdogs 17 to 7. If they can find a way to shut down Cincinnati’s offense, or at least keep things under control, then the Bulls could beat the Bearcats and put themselves into first place in the Big East.
Either way, the winner of this game could very well be the Big East Champion as West Virginia and Connecticut are having down years and Pittsburgh, even though they are 5 and 1 straight-up, don’t appear to be as talented as Cincinnati and South Florida.
Hokies Take on Yellow Jackets in Huge ACC Match Up
Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech, at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, is actually a much bigger game than some fans might believe. The ACC isn’t nearly as bad as some college basketball commentators might have led college football fans to think.
VA Tech has been perfect in 2009 save for a Week 1 loss to Alabama. Georgia Tech has been perfect in 2009 save for a beat down by the tough Miami Hurricanes in Week 3.
If Georgia Tech can beat Virginia Tech at home as underdogs, then the Yellow Jackets will all but end the Hokies’ dreams of fighting their way into the BCS Championship. Virginia Tech is ranked in the Top 5 in the polls and will have plenty of chances of rising into the Top 3 or 4 with Florida and Alabama possibly knocking one or the other out in the SEC Championship Game and Texas taking on Oklahoma before facing a tough team in the Big 12 Championship should they beat the Sooners.
Should Virginia Tech win out, Texas suffers a loss, and Alabama or Florida lose, the VA Tech Hokies will find themselves playing for the BCS Championship Game.
Georgia Tech would love to make sure that doesn’t happen by beating the Hokies this Saturday.
