College Football Team Profile: Bet on Florida Gators
September 8, 2009
The Florida Gators could win their third BCS National Championship in the past four years if they can traverse a better than expected SEC Conference. Everybody wants to bet on football, right? Well, their might not be a better bet on football this year than dumping on the Florida Gators.
Then again, after watching what happened this past week in college football, the Florida Gators might not be as solid of a bet in every game as one would expect. Let’s take a look at the Florida Gators and then we can discuss whether or not the mantra, “A bet on football is a bet on the Florida Gators!” holds true this year in college football.
The Florida Gators return a decidedly awesome defense. It was on full display this past Saturday when the Florida Gators dominated poor little Charleston Southern. The Gators’ D did allow a field goal, however.
On offense the Gators don’t appear to have lost a step without Percy Harvin who jolted to the NFL after last year’s BCS Championship run. Bet on football? How about just bet on the Gators’ offense as they racked up 62 points against Charleston Southern.
Okay, so things started out well for Florida, but there are a few knocks. Florida went into their Saturday game as a 73 point favorite. Although not every sportsbook in the world offered a wager on the Gators, they are now 0 and 1 ATS. Their against the spread record is going to show that.
But will that translate to the Gators being a top team to bet on or bet against as the season progresses? Actually, it will translate to the Gators being a bet against. The truth is that Florida no doubt will put up a lot of points, but if their defense can’t stop some of the better offenses in the nation, like Tennessee’s for example, then how are they going to keep covering those ridiculous spreads?
We’re talking about gambling, of course, not whether or not the Gators will win the BCS Championship. At the end of the day, the Florida Gators a rock solid team to do just that, to go undefeated and to win the BCS Championship for the 3 rd time in the past four years, but when it comes to a particular bet on football, or bets on football for that matter, the Gators are probably not the best team for gamblers to key in on this year.
Why? Well, because the lines will be way out of whack in almost every Florida Gator game this season, such is the respect shown to Tim Tebow, Urban Meyer and the entire Florida Gator roster.
So, does the mantra, “A bet on football is a bet on the Florida Gators!” hold water? No, but because the Gators figure to put up a ton of points in every game, and probably give up more points to teams like Tennessee and LSU than what’s to be expected, the mantra, “A bet on football is a bet on the over in Florida games!” might hold water.
Look to bet the overs when Florida takes the field. That’s my advice in regards to this team.
