College Football Recap – A Dog Bites USC and the SEC is the Best in the Nation
September 21, 2009
The USC Trojans, who looked so great a week ago on the road against Ohio State when freshman Matt Barkley led them to a victory on the road, looked not just less than great, they looked awful, terrible, horrible. Wait…dreadful. I had to get that word in there.
How bad was USC? 13 points bad. That’s what the 2nd ranked team in the NCAA Power Rankings scored on Saturday when getting run over by the Washington Huskies. The play calling was what really sucked. The Trojans never adjusted to the fact that Aaron Corp, a mobile quarterback, was throwing the ball for them and not the stay in the pocket Barkley. It cost them. With all of their supposed weapons, USC’s offense looked really weak against Ohio State. They looked downright anemic against Washington.
Forget about getting back into the BCS Championship discussion. USC is toast.
Most Impressive Victory – - Miami Hurricanes
The Hurricanes faced a team that absolutely dominated them in 2008, Georgia Tech, and held them to 17 points. They racked 33 on their own and showed that the victory against Florida State in Week 1 wasn’t a mirage. Since Florida State dominated BYU on the road, this past Saturday, Miami has to be considered a threat to win the ACC. By beating Florida State and Miami, the Hurricanes have beaten 2 straight Top 25 teams, making them 2 and 0 ATS.
Honorable Mention – - The Oklahoma Sooners came into their game against Tulsa not really knowing if they had bounced back from their Week 1 loss to BYU. They know now that they have. Oklahoma not only racked up 45 against Tulsa but kept the Golden Hurricane, one of the top offensive teams in college football, from putting a single point on the board. Nice job.
Honorable Mention – - There was some talk among gambling circles that the Cincinnati Bearcats would be exposed this past Saturday on the road against a good Pac-10 team, the Oregon State Beavers. Not so. Cincinnati destroyed the -1 NCAA betting line by thumping Oregon State by 10, 28 to 18.
Biggest Upset – - Washington Huskies
If things had gone their way against LSU, then Washington would no doubt be undefeated and ranked in the Top 10. Washington is also 3 and 0 against the spread and possibly could be the team to beat in the Pac-10 now that USC is down.
Honorable Mention – - Florida State showed that BYU has some things to learn by going to Utah and absolutely destroying the Cougars, 54 to 28. With Miami looking good, VA Tech beating Nebraska and Florida State showing up against BYU, the ACC should have gained some respect.
Moving Up – - Auburn Tigers
A lot of people thought hiring Gene Chizik as head coach was a bad move for Auburn. So far, so good, as the Tigers are 3 and 0 and have covered ever spread so far in 2009.
Honorable Mention – - Iowa looked bad in Week 1, bounced back in Week 2, and looked fantastic this past Saturday when taking down the Arizona Wildcats at home by beating the Wildcats 27 to 17.
Other Notable Games
Watch out for Kansas in the Big 12. The Jayhawks have covered against the spread in three games in a row and have proven to be more than capable of putting points on the board. They beat Duke 44 to 16 on Saturday.
Boise State rolled into Fresno and beat the Fresno State Bulldogs 51 to 34. They have taken over the mantle as the BCS buster for 2009 now that BYU lost.
Florida, Texas, LSU, Alabama, Mississippi and Penn State all won by good margins even though only Alabama covered the spread.
