College Football Predications – California Bears To Maul Colorado Buffaloes

September 11, 2010

The Colorado Buffaloes will join the Pac-10 in 2012, and holy crap do they have a lot of work to do before they get there. Almost all the NCAAF betting trends are against the Buffalo as they hit the road to sunny California to take on the rising Bears. A -9.5 betting line for the home team makes this a tough football prediction from a handicapping standpoint, but I’m not going to over think this one.

The California Golden Bears may have lost Jahvid Best to the NFL Draft, but it looks as though they’ve found someone to take his place as the fulcrum of the team. Shane Vereen, who has served as Best’s backup until this year, ran for 67 yards on 14 carries and scored 2 touchdowns on the ground. He also added 2 catches for 28 yards while notching a receiving score as well.

Quarterback Kevin Riley threw for 258 passing yards and 3 touchdowns in a 52-3 rout of the UC Davis Aggies, and connected with 11 different targets in the process.

Nobody had a more substantial day than Keenan Allen, a breakout freshman who caught 4 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, Allen is a matchup nightmare for most defensive backs. Alongside sure-handed Marvin Jones, who had 5 catches for 81 yards of his own, the passing game looks to be in good hands.

Colorado Buffalo (1-0) vs. California Golden Bears (1-0)

NCAAF Betting Line: California -9.5 (50.5)

So while everything seems to be glimmering with sunshine for California, it’s the same old pits over in Colorado. Buffalos managed a 24-3 win over Colorado State last weekend while being led by quarterback Tyler Hansen who had 192 yards, 2 touchdowns and a lone interception.

What has always marked Colorado as a cagey underdog football prediction on weekends is their ability to lock down on defense. The problem is that they don’t sneak up on any teams anymore. No major football program wants to become the next victim to Colorado’s blood thirsty ways after what they did to Michigan. As such, the Buffalo have gone just 8-15 ATS in their last 23 road games.

On top of that, they’re just 1-11 SU in their last 12 games on the road.

Making matters more impossible to encourage a bet on the Buffalo is the fact that California is 14-3 SU in their last 17 games at home. California is simply too explosive overall to be ignored at home, and they’ll find ways to penetrate Colorado’s defense. Whether the visiting team can do the same against California will influence how you bet.

But if you’re asking me, California’s defense comes through against with another near-shutout that puts Colorado to shame and keeps things moving forward to California as your Pac-10 football prediction of the weekend.
