College Football Point Spread – Fresno State vs Utah State

September 18, 2010

Who are your picks in this weekend’s college football point spread? It won’t be an easy choice in Logan, UT Saturday, where the tough Utah State Aggies host the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Fresno State Bulldogs (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) at Utah State Aggies (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS)

Saturday, September 18: 8:00 p.m. ESPN3

NCAA Betting Odds:

Fresno State: -5 ½
Utah State: + 5 ½
Total Points: 58

Entering this game, it is the Fresno State who is favored, and with good reason. They had a wildly impressive Week 1 win.

Two Saturday’s ago, the Bulldogs welcomed the Cincinnati Bearcats to town, and it was actually Fresno State that was the underdog in the college football point spread. The Bulldogs took care of business though, limiting Cincinnati to zero second half points, and beating the Bearcats 28-14.

For Fresno to continue their success, they’ll need the same strong play they got from quarterback Ryan Colburn in Week 1. Colburn is a senior lefty who struggled at times last year, but was awesome in Fresno’s opener, completing 75 percent of his passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns. Still despite his big arm, Colburn will need some help from the running game this weekend. Against Cincinnati, Fresno State rushed for just 49 yards as a team. Currently that ranks 117th out of 120 I-A teams.

Not to be outdone are the Utah State Aggies, who believe they have what it takes to get a win not only in the college football point spread, but straight up as well.

The reason for that confidence actually comes from a loss they had in the opening week. That happened at Oklahoma, where the Aggies fell down 21-0 early, before rallying back, and ultimately falling 31-24 in a game that was even closer than that final score might indicate. Even losing that game, it gave Utah State confidence they could hang with anyone in the country.

Like Fresno State, the star of this Utah State offense is quarterback Diondre Borel. The dual-threat signal-caller is back for his third year as starter of this team, and has looked good so far in two games. On the young season, Borel has accounted for 596 yards passing, and four touchdowns, but must cut down on the four interceptions he’s thrown. Granted that three of them came at the hands of the tough Oklahoma secondary, but still. That number needs to be improved.

While this one will be back and forth early, we expect it to be opened up late. Because of it, take the Fresno State Bulldogs as your pick in the college football point spread.

There are a few reasons to like Fresno. For one, while this is their first road game of the season, they did have two full weeks to prepare. With Utah State coming off a dog fight two weeks ago, and another game last Saturday, it’ll be Fresno who’s slightly fresher.

More importantly is the personnel. Fresno State proved in Week 1 that they can effectively shut down running quarterbacks. They made Cincinnati signal-caller Zach Collaros look uncomfortable all night, and we expect them to do the same with Borel.

By the end of the season Utah State is going to be a really good team. But right now they’re just not ready to win this game.

Take Fresno State as your college football point spread pick Saturday afternoon. You won’t regret it.

The Pick: Fresno State -5 ½
