BC enters this Week 6 confrontation with the Wolfpack off a pair of humbling defeats against the Virginia Tech Hokies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish the L/2 weeks. After getting blanked in their own house 19-0 by “Beamer Ball”, the Eagles put forth another dud last week in their prime time battle with the Golden Domers.
The biggest problem to start the season for head coach Frank Spaziani has been the lack of punch from his offense. The unit ranks 98th overall in both total yards (309 YPG) and points scored (19.2 PPG) with the offensive ineptitude mostly being due in large part to terribly pathetic QB play.
David Shinskie was benched last week in favor of redshirt frosh Chase Rettig who did some nice things before getting knocked out of the game with an ankle injury. Mike Marscovetra came in to replace him and threw for 193 yards, but also tossed a pair of picks.
The lack of a passing attack has really hindered the success of running back Montel Harris whose rushed for just 334 yards on 82 overall carries (4.1 YPC). Fortunately for the Eagles offense, the Wolfpack have been much better at defending the pass (#26 at 173 YPG) than the run (#82 at 164 YPG) so some lanes should be made available for Harris to take advantage of.
NC State’s offense has had absolutely no problem racking up points (#25 at 36.2 PPG) and moving the pigskin (#26 at 448.8 YPG) with junior gunslinger Russell Wilson leading the unit’s charge. He’s already thrown for 1474 yards with a 14:4 TD/INT ratio on the year.
He’ll be throwing into a BC defense that’s simply been gouged through the air all season long allowing an average of 229.5 passing YPG (#80). It did however just step up and contain a very potent Notre Dame passing attack limiting Dayne Crist to just 203 yards on 24-of-44 passing, so it could be coming around.
It’s also intercepted six passes overall (#28), so Wilson better be on the lookout after tossing three of them last week against the Hokies.
NCAA Football Insider Tip: BC hits the road for the first time this season failing to snag a college football picks winner in four tries for its CFB betting backers. That said; the squad just seems to have the Wolfpack’s number winning each of the L/3 meetings SU while posting a 2-1 ATS mark (lone loss came by the hook).
NC State enters off a debilitating defeat after holding a 17-0 lead at the start of the second quarter. After being dogged or a short favorite in each of its first four match-ups against FBS competition, oddsmakers are now asking them to cover a near double-digit spread against a program that’s dominated them the L/3 seasons.
With the Eagles a profitable 8-2 ATS the L/10 times they were tagged a road underdog in the 3.5 to 10-point range, that just doesn’t sit well with me whatsoever.
BC is too proud a program to just be a whooping boy for the entire ACC to beat like a drum, so look for Spaziani’s kids to step up and once again give the home team a major test and grab their first college football picks victory in the process.
