College Football Odds & Picks – Oklahoma Faces Pass-Heavy Cincinnati

September 25, 2010

The Oklahoma Sooners should be concerned about the 351-yards they gave up against Air Force, while losing against the college football odds, but what does it matter? It’s not like they’ll face a team that runs the infernal triple option again this year. The type of team they will face is squads like Cincinnati, which love to air the ball out, making this a seemingly dangerous game for Oklahoma as -13.5 road favorites.

It should also serve as a bit of a warning that this game came down from an opening line of -18.0 for Oklahoma in a damn hurry. The Bearcats may be just 1-2 SU this season, but they’ve also averaged 337.4-yards of total offense per game making this a tough call with the college football odds in mind.

Still, how can you not love Landry Jones, the sophomore quarterback who has had the auspicious task of replacing Sam Bradford? Jones saw plenty of action last year since Bradford was injured and has taken a huge step in the right direction. He’s already thrown for 851-yards with 61.9 percent of his passes completed, and piled up 7 touchdowns and just 2 picks.

What’s disheartening about those numbers is that Jones and the Sooners are just 1-2 ATS against the college football odds this year. Don’t worry, though. The Bearcats are 0-2 SU in games with college football odds and are 0-2 ATS this year to boot.

#8 Oklahoma Sooners (3-0) vs. Cincinnati Bearcats (1-2)

College Football Odds: Oklahoma -13.5 (56)

Unlike Landry Jones, quarterback Zach Collaros of the Bearcats has thrown 659-yards along with 6 touchdowns but is failing to follow in the large shoes of his predecessor, Tony Pike. Cincinnati still averages 24.3 points per game, but haven’t faced a defense like Oklahoma’s yet. If the Sooners do anything well, it’s recruiting great defensive talent, which makes their chances against the college football odds this weekend that much better.

The line has come down because the public and sharps don’t know what to make of Oklahoma yet. Jones is doing an admirable job at quarterback, and is far more reliable on the scoreboard than Collaros, but their two losses on the betting line to Air Force and Utah State have many worried. To be fair, the line against Utah State was -34.5 (31-24 win) and the line against Air Force was -16.5.

The oddsmakers are tapering their enthusiasm for Oklahoma on the spread, but that doesn’t mean they can’t crush it this weekend. I don’t like the Bearcats at all, and the Sooners will do everything they can to defy the college football odds and throttle the home team this weekend.
