College Football Odds Busters – Baylor Going For Upset Over Texas Tech

October 9, 2010

The Baylor Bears are 4-1 SU thus far and undefeated in Big 12 play, and they’re looking to keep it that way by overcoming the college football odds as road dogs against the Texas Tech Raiders. Unfortunately for them, history isn’t on their side. The Raiders have dominated this matchup by going 10-0 SU and 7-3 ATS in the past decade of football against Baylor.

When it comes to great quarterbacking at the college level, we usually think of Texas Tech. But the better gun slinger in this game actually comes from Baylor. Trying to resurrect respect for Baylor in the Big 12 is sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin III, who has posted 1,351 passing yards and 11 touchdowns with just 2 interceptions this year.

He’s never faced the Texas Tech Raiders, though he was on the sidelines last year when the Bears lost 13-20 at the Cotton Bowl.

However, the writing’s been on the wall with this series. Baylor has been handicapped with college football odds of +20.5 and +21.5 in their past two meetings with Texas Tech, and have covered both times. In fact, they lost both games by a margin of 7.0 points.

Baylor Bears (4-1) vs. Texas Tech Raiders (2-2)

Saturday, October 9th — Cotton Bowl — 12:00pm EST

College Football Odds: Texas Tech -2.5 (62)

The other warning sign for this game is that Texas Tech has been blown out in their last two games, They lost 14-24 to the Texas Longhorns with a +3.0 line, but were then lambasted by the Iowa State Cyclones 38-52 as -6.5 favorites.

Senior quarterback Taylor Potts has been pretty good in the pocket for the Raiders, but has failed to put up the gaudy numbers of his predecessors at the position. He may have thrown for 577 yards and 5 scores in the loss to Iowa State, but he didn’t do enough to make up for Texas Tech’s defensive ineptitude against the college football odds.

As much as Potts is capable of, Baylor’s Griffin can do better. The Bears’ allow just 182.4 passing yards per game, and while Texas Tech can certainly move the chains at home, they can’t stop anyone either. Texas Tech gives up 242.8 yards per game through the skies.

Baylor is a team on the rise thanks to some savvy recruiting and superb coaching in the Big 12. While Texas Tech has been on the verge of breaking through for several years, they’ve taken some serious steps backwards this season. When the Baylor Bears throttle their defense and cover the college football odds, Texas Tech will be sent reeling back even more so.
