College Football Odds – Northern Illinois Heavily Favored To Rout Buffalo
October 16, 2010
The Northern Illinois Huskies are basically two-touchdown favorites this weekend against the lowly Buffalo Bulls, which shouldn’t shock anybody betting college football odds this weekend.
The Huskies are undefeated in their last 4 games against Buffalo and have gone 3-1 ATS during those matches.
Not only is Northern Illinois defending a streak against Buffalo, they also have a three-game winning streak heading in to this game they hope to extend even further.

You probably won’t hear much national press coverage on the NIU Huskies, largely because they’re in the dreaded MAC, but one thing that’s worth noting about them is their stout rushing game.
They rank 12th in the country with 236.2 yards per game, largely because of running back Chad Spann who is averaging 6.1 yards per carry and has totaled 642 yards on the ground this season along with 6 touchdowns.
Spann may be just 5-foot-9, but he’s like a high speed mini-fridge that weighs nearly 200 pounds. The senior tailback is trying to do some damage to get noticed, and has crested the 100+ yard mark three times this season.
You’d think that Spann might not find room to run against Buffalo, which gives up just 113.0 yards per game on the ground. They focus nearly all of their attention on the ground game, leaving their secondary out to dry.
The Huskies’ college football odds this weekend depend on their ability to capitalize on a defense that is very iffy through the air.

As for Buffalo, well you can guess where this is going. The Bulls don’t have a hope in hell of being a straight up winner this weekend, so you have to figure out if they have any chance of covering the college football odds. Let’s put is simply – not with this offense.
The Bulls are the 100th best scoring offense in the country (Hooryay! We’re in the top 100!) with just 19.2 points per game. They off-set that by allowing 25.8 points per game, and though they have a decent running defense, their secondary just doesn’t have the right personal to stop – well – anybody.
Northern Illinois doesn’t pride themselves on a superb passing attack, but NIU quarterback Chandler Harnish has been relatively mistake free. He’s thrown for 927 yards and 8 touchdowns with just 1 pick. That’s largely because he’s off running the football most of the time along with Spann. Harnish averages 6.7 yards per carry and has busted up the gut and around the edges for 382 rushing yards this season.
The versatility of the Huskies’ offense is the most bankable part of this low level matchup. It’s not really “how” the Huskies will score points, but more like “when”. They’ve averaged 23 points per game at home, and gave up an average of 17.0 points against North Dakota and Temple. That being said, both of those teams have more reliable and steadfast offenses compared to Buffalo.
I just don’t see how the Bulls go on the road and score more than a few field goals in this game – and that’s if they’re lucky. Northern Illinois does all the college football betting nut jobs a favor by clearing the line easily while holding Buffalo off the board to keep this game in the UNDER.
