College Football Odds – Nebraska vs Washington

September 17, 2010

The Washington Huskies play host to the Number 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers this Saturday at Husky Field in Seattle. The Huskies are looking at this game as a chance to climb into the top 25 rankings and with 2011 consensus number one NFL Draft pick Jake Locker under center, the Huskies are live dogs in this game.

The college football odds have Nebraska as the -3-point favorites and a straight up bet on Washington will pay college football bettors +130 on the moneyline. The game total is set at 53 points.

Jake Locker has had an incredible college career despite a career winning record of 9-21 as the Huskies starter. He would have the worst winning percentage of any drafted quarterback in the first round in at least the past ten years.  He has all the tools, at 6’3 and 228 pounds, his career completion percentage is 54% but 60% this season.

In the Huskies win 41-20 win over Syracuse, Locker completed 22 of 33 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns.

The Cornhuskers are looking for their third 3-0 start since 2004. Their first two wins came against easy opponents, pushing a -39-point spread against Western Kentucky and failing to cover a -27.5-point spread in a win over Idaho.

The Cornhuskers offense is lead by duel-threat quarterback Taylor Martinez. In two games this season, Martinez has 242 yards passing and leads the team with 284 rushing yards. He has yet to throw a touchdown pass but he has run for five touchdowns.

Coach Bo Pelini suggested that it’s time to unveil a vertical passing game, allowing Martinez to throw more. The strategy is to lull their opponents into only protecting against the run and then go deep into single coverage.

Looking at the college betting trends, we see the Nebraska Cornhuskers are 6-1-1 in their past 8 non-conference games and 4-1-1 in their past 6 September games. The Huskies have been good at home, in their past six home game, Washington is 5-1 ATS and against the Big-12 they are 4-1-1 ATS.

I like the Huskies in this game, what we saw from Jake Locker against Syracuse is ideally what we’ll see the rest of the season. 68% of the bets are on the Cornhuskers in this game and when I see a top 10 team with a spread of 3-points or less against an unranked opponent, I get the feeling it’s a trap game.

I’m going to fade the public here and pick the Washington Huskies to win this game straight up.

NCAAF Betting Pick: Washington Huskies +130
