College Football Odds – Mississippi State vs. #15 LSU

September 18, 2010

It’ll be home sweet home for the No.21 LSU Tigers this weekend as they play their first game in front of their fans at Tiger Stadium. Hosting the Mississippi State Bulldogs won’t be an easy task, especially since the opening college football odds on this game have already come down by a good amount. I wouldn’t be so quick to put the Bulldogs to sleep this weekend, especially considering that LSU has played some pretty awful football.

Les Miles is a household name in the SEC and has had a tremendous amount of success as head coach, but even he’s being tested with Jordan Jefferson at quarterback. Jefferson has completed just 56.1 of his passes and totaled a measly 247 passing yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on his stat line.

LSU may be 12-4 SU in their last 16 games overall, but they’re just 3-11-1 ATS in their last 15 games at home. Overall, they’re a paltry 2-4-1 ATS in their last 7 games. That’s why the college football odds on this game are inching towards the Bulldogs.

Nobody trusts the LSU Tigers, and frankly nobody should.

Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-1) vs. LSU Tigers (2-0)

College Football Odds – LSU -7.5 (43.5)

Where this game gets dicey is grading the Mississippi State Bulldogs on the road. They’re just 4-8 ATS and 3-9 SU in their past 12 games on the road, and a glaring 0-10 SU in their past 10 games against LSU. They’re also 3-7 ATS during that winless streak.

Which isn’t to say that the Bulldogs are dead dogs in this one. They walloped Memphis 49-7 in their opener and lost a close game 14-17 against then No.21 Auburn.

Quarterback Chris Relf is atrocious, having completed just 19-of-35 pass attempts for 226 yards this season. He has a beast of a running back in Vick Ballard, who is usually more of a goal line guy. But the problem for Memphis State is getting anywhere near the goal line to begin with.

The rush defense for the Bulldogs is going to be the biggest issue overall. They gave up 190 yards of offense to Auburn, and that should impose a big day for LSU’s backfield, but I also want to ask you this: who is the last great running back to come out of LSU?

Yeah, I have no idea either (not off the top of my head anyways).

Jefferson may not like the attention he’s getting, but when the college football odds are heaped on your shoulders, you have to respond positively to the pressure. I don’t like the way this guy has been reacting to his bad play, and though the Bulldogs have a weak defense, they can rattle Jefferson’s cage.

I don’t like the smell of this game at all. The Mississippi State Bulldogs have given you 10 straight games of proof why they’re not worth betting on, and LSU looks terrible this year. A lack of stiff competition hasn’t given us the privilege of seeing their true colors yet. I doubt this game will, but it might be just as ugly as their past two performances on the road, which is why I’m airing on the side of caution in this weekend’s college football odds.
