Wisconsin is a team that once again played well in the Big Ten, but not well enough to go to the Rose Bowl. The Badgers were 10-3 straight-up, but split twelve decisions in the college football odds. They did end the season on a high note, scoring a win over Miami in the Champs Sports Bowl. Bret Bielema, who took over from Barry Alvarez, is 38-14 SU in four years at the helm.
We’re really not too sure about the potency of the Badger defense, which has allowed 24 points a game over the last three years, but we do know that the running game works. John Clay, who had 1517 yards last year, teams with Montee Ball to give them a big-time combination, and the offensive line, which is one of the best in the country, averages 320 pounds across. Yes, Wisconsin is back to playing the power game. And they get respect, with a +350 price to win the Big Ten title in the college football odds. If Scott Tolzien (2705 yards, 16 TD’s) can get some real balance going, this will be a hard team for anyone to stop.
Here are some of the trends as they impact the college football betting game picks:
- Wisconsin has won five of its last six games SU
- Wisconsin has played four of its last five games OVER the total
- Wisconsin has covered six of its last 18 road games
- Wisconsin has won four of its last six road games SU
- Wisconsin has played six of its last eight road games OVER the total
- UNLV has covered two of its last ten games
- UNLV has lost six of its last nine games SU
- UNLV has played five of its last six games UNDER the total
- UNLV has covered one of its last five home games
- UNLV has won six of its last nine home games SU
- UNLV has played four of its last six home games UNDER the total
- Wisconsin has won five of the last six meetings SU
UNLV’s new coach is Bobby Hauck, who achieved great success at Montana in the FCS division. He inherits a team with some upside, but perhaps in need of some of the discipline he provides in order to improve their college football odds. The question around Vegas is whether his club is ready for the ground-and-pound. Quarterback Omar Clayton, an athletic junior who completed 60% of his passes last season, can make things happen, but the success of this offense is probably going to rely a bit more on people like running backs CJ Cox and Channing Trotter.
The Rebels have had only one winning season in the last 15, so Hauck has his work cut out for him. Wisconsin is up against it to an extent here too, as they have covered only three of their last 15 as a double-digit road favorite in the college football odds. When it comes to size, UNLV’s defense, which has a bunch of linebackers who are around 220 pounds, could get overpowered. Wisconsin always has a very healthy contingent of fans at this site, which will help. There was a close call when these teams met in 2007, as the Badgers needed a TD drive in the last two minutes to pull out a 20-17 win as a 25.5-point favorite in the college football odds. I’m not thinking it’s going to be that way this time. Hauck’s team will get beat at its own new game, as we lay it with Wisconsin in our college betting game pick for Saturday.
