We all know how the Hokies season started, but since back-to-back losses to open 2010, Virginia Tech has one of the best teams in college football betting, ripping off four wins in a row.
As always, this group is led by their veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor, a do it all senior. On the season, Taylor is playing lights out at under center, completing 60 percent of his passes, and throwing nine touchdowns. However, the difference lately has been Taylor’s work on the ground, as this dual-threat athlete has become maybe the Hokies best running weapon. He has now rushed for a team-high 449 yards on the season, including a pair of back-to-back 100 yard rushing games each of the last two weeks. That has been especially important with Ryan Williams- an All-ACC running back a year ago-out with injury.
Meanwhile, the latest college football lines seem to indicate that Wake Forest has little chance in this game. Looking at the statistics, it’s no surprise why. The Demon Deacons just aren’t very good right now.
On the year, Wake Forest is struggling in all areas of the game, especially on defense, where they’re one of the ACC’s worst units. In 2010, the Demon Deacons rank just 103rd in the country in total defense, allowing 429 yards per game. Their scoring defense is even worse, allowing 35 points per game, which ranks 107th in the country. It’s hard to believe that this defense produced recent high NFL Draft picks Aaron Curry and Alphonso Smith, because right now they don’t seem to have any NFL level talent.
Really though, as bad as this defense has been, the difference between this year and years past is the passing game. Quarterback Tanner Price is in the midst of his first season under center, and he is struggling…big time! Currently, Price is completing just 58 percent of his passes, and has thrown just five touchdowns on the year.
And when you add everything up, the latest college football lines make sense; Virginia Tech should be a huge favorite in this game. They’ll cover that point spread Saturday.
As was mentioned before, the Hokies are playing much better football of late, and when you include Taylor and this offense with an improving defense, it’s easy to see why the Hokies will win this game. Dating back two weeks ago to their win over NC State, the Hokies have outscored their opponents 79-34 in their last six quarters of action.
Wake Forest has lost four games in a row, and doesn’t seem to have much chance in this one. With the latest college football lines out, make Virginia Tech your weekend college football pick.
