Key stats for Central Florida — The Knights are usually very tough defensively under coach George O’Leary. They are, in fact, ranked second in the nation in pass efficiency defense and ninth in total defense. Opposing quarterbacks have completed just 44.5% of their passes against the UCF stop unit, and that figure is the lowest in the nation. The Knights are also 13th in the nation in kickoff returns. On offense, there are a few challenges; UCF can run the ball (193 ypg) but ranks 100th in passing yards per game.
Key stats for Marshall, as we look at the college football lines — The Thundering Herd has the top ranking sackmaster in the nation in defensive end Vinny Curry, who’s got eight (solo) on the season. However, they are 104th in pass efficiency defense, as they have allowed 65% completions and have intercepted only two passes in their first five games. Quarterback Brian Anderson has completed 58% of his passes with eight touchdowns.
Here are some of the head-to-head trends that may influence our football betting prediction on this game:
- Central Florida has won the last five meetings SU
- Central Florida has covered five of the last six meetings
- Six of the last eight meetings have gone UNDER the total

They’re headed toward a goal at UCF, which seems modest but isn’t, and that is a second straight winning season under George O’Leary, because it has yet to happen. That could change in a big way with this edition of the Knights, who most certainly bring a defensive angle to Conference USA play, where most of the attacks are wide-open and the defenses (save for Southern Miss’ unit for often that not) have been lacking.
When you see that Central Florida has been so protective of ground when it comes to opposing aerial attacks, you know this is going to be a big challenge for Brian Anderson, the senior who was 58% accurate last season and won the job back when the Willy Korn transfer didn’t quite work out for the program. With limited punch, Marshall has covered one of five games in the college football lines. And the Herd has lost five straight meetings in this series.
If the Knights shut down Anderson’s passing lanes, which is not an unreasonable expectation, is there a "plan B" for the Herd? Not without a "go-to" running back there isn’t. The "committee" works much better for UCF, and in that stifling effort (42-7) against UAB last week, they didn’t have to throw much, but got a combined 12 of 14 from Jeffrey Godfrey and Rob Calabrese. Expect O’Leary to keep shuffling them in and out, taking advantage of what each can do.
We’ll look for defense to prevail, laying the points with UCF, the 6.5-point favorite in the college football lines for Wednesday.
