Wow, imagine this – you’ve got a top 20 team from a BCS conference, getting points at home in the college football line from a team in a non-BCS conference. That sounds appetizing, doesn’t it? Well, it kind of makes sense when you consider that the road team in this matchup is Boise State, which has won 49 of its 53 games since Chris Petersen took over as head coach of the program. Boise State completed another unbeaten season last year when they beat TCU in the Fiesta Bowl, and they have nearly the entire cast back from that squad.
Ten starters return on both offense and defense, and that includes quarterback Kellen Moore, who threw for 3536 yards and 39 TD’s with only THREE interceptions. This team ran for 5.1 yards a carry, and Jeremy Avery scampered for 1151 yards. Senior wide receivers Austin Pettis and Titus Young combined for 1896 yards and 34 touchdowns. The stop unit held Oregon to eight points and 152 yards, and TCU scored just ten points on 317 yards against the Broncos. Boise State has suffered just one regular season loss since September of 2007. And believe me – no one has taken them for granted for a long time.
Here are some of the trends as they impact our football betting prediction on this game:
- Boise State has won 25 of its last 26 games SU
- Boise State has played four of its last six games OVER the total
- Virginia Tech has won and covered its last five games
- Virginia Tech has played five of its last seven games UNDER the total
Virginia Tech’s strength comes from its ground attack, which is fortified. The Hokies, who are +1800 in the college football line to win the national championship, are not only bringing back the sensational Ryan Williams, who had 1655 rushing yards as a freshman, they are also welcoming back Darren Evans, who ran for 1265 yards in HIS freshman season, then sat out last year with a torn ACL. Then you can add to that the talents of Tyrod Taylor, the quarterback who ran for 370 yards. The question is whether Taylor, who threw for 2311 yards and 13 TD’s last season, can strike enough balance to force defenses to play him honestly. Boise State will test him, you can be assured.
Last year’s Hokie defense held opponents to just 47.4% completions, and they allowed 3.6 yards a rush, which was actually their highest figure over the last seven seasons. And they only bring back four starters to the unit. For Boise State, which is +800 in college football line to win national laurels, this is their biggest regular season game ever. It gives them a gateway to the title game, since they are -4000 to win the Western Athletic Conference crown. What’s unusual, aside from the fact that the Broncos lay points on the road in the college football line, is that they actually have the edge on special teams against Frank Beamer’s Gobblers. Yeah, we’re pulling the trigger with BSU, laying the points in our football betting prediction for Monday.
JAY’S PLAY: BOISE STATE -1.5 ***
(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
