College Football Heisman Rankings – Week 4 Sees Some Go, Most Stay
September 29, 2009
NCAA Football – Heisman Trophy Contenders
Case Keenum (QB) – Houston Cougars
Keenum and the Cougars have finally earned the respect of the pollsters. The Texan-born quarterback has scored through the air and on the ground, and if he can keep posting up huge games, like his 465-yard effort against Texas Tech, then Keenum will find himself in BCS contention, and with a plane ticket to New York.
Next Game: Houston (-16.5) vs. Texas El Paso
Colt McCoy (QB) – Texas Longhorns
The leaders of the Longhorns may be the biggest benefactor or Tebow’s injury. With 1,145 yards and 10 total touchdowns, he is certainly one of the heavy favorites in the Heisman marathon, but he has to cut down on his habit for tossing picks. He has five thus far.
Next Game: BYE
Tim Tebow (QB) – Florida Gators
Tim Tebow, and pretty much everyone in Florida, spent the weekend puking up a storm. With a huge open side sack, Tebow bashed in to the fat knee of one of his lineman and was down for the count. He has plenty of time to rest and sip on the holy water to get back in action, but his poor statistical effort can’t afford him missing any game time.
Next Game: BYE
MOVING ON UP: Berry and Pike Improving Stock
Safety Eric Berry is the only defensive player in the country making some Heisman noise. Why isn’t he in the big race? Firs, the Volunteers are unranked and stand to get floored by their SEC brethren. But almost none of that is Berry’s fault. He has 30 tackles this season, and one interception and deserves a temporary mention in the Furious Heisman Rankings. Without him, the Volunteers are an absolute joke. Man, even with him, they’re pretty terrible.
Tony Pike of Cincinnati is a 6-foot-6, 210 pound bean pole with a sniper rifle for an arm. He has 1,223 yards, 11 touchdowns and has also tacked on two rushing touchdowns to his total. With just two interceptions, and the Bearcats inching up the standings, Pike’s value is sky rocketing.
Next Game: Auburn vs. Tennessee (-2), Cincinnati (-26.5) vs. Miami (Ohio)
MOVING ON DOWN: Hall, Best Take Brutal Hits In Heisman Campaigns
Javhid Best ended any hope of a running-back taking home the Heisman by totaling just 55-yards in a pretty stunning loss to Oregon. The Golden Bears have sunk down the rankings, and Best’s chances of getting the NYC invite are dead.
Meanwhile, Max Hall, the gun slinging quarterback of BYU. His team isn’t winning by much, and he’s piling up interceptions (8 picks so far). His pedigree doesn’t have the same worth as the four other quarterbacks on this list, and we haven’t even mentioned Jimmy Clausen as an outside shot.
Next Game: Utah State vs. BYU (-26), USC (-6.5) vs. California
