That’s right, in Year 2 of the Brady Hoke era at San Diego State, the Aztecs are playing incredibly well, having won their last three games.
While you can usually pinpoint a star or two on most good teams, this San Diego State team really is one of the most balanced in college football. They rank in the Top 45 nationally in both passing offense and rushing offense.
If you had to pick a star, it would likely be freshman running back Ronnie Hillman. How a player of Hillman’s skill ended up at San Diego State as opposed to a Pac-10 school is beyond us, however, in his few months on campus, his impact has certainly shown. On the season, Hillman has rushed for 905 yards and 11 touchdowns, numbers that are even more impressive considering that he was limited most of last week with a hip injury. Still, at full strength, Hillman is as good as any back in the Mountain West, and had his first career 200 yard game three weeks ago against Air Force.
However, just when Hillman lulls you to sleep with the running game, quarterback Ryan Lindley can hit you for a big pass. While Lindley struggled in the past with turnovers, he’s put that behind him in 2010. On the season, he’s passed for 2,255 yards and 15 touchdowns, while tossing just seven picks. Lindley is coming of his best game of the season, when he threw for 365 yards in a shootout win against Wyoming last Saturday.
So what chance does Colorado State have in the College Football Game Lines? Not as bad as you’d think?
The Rams enter this one with two wins in their last three games, the sole loss coming to a pretty darn good Utah team. The Utes are No. 5 in the country.
Unlike their opponents Saturday though, Colorado State doesn’t have a balanced offense, as much as they simply rely on the big arm of quarterback Pete Thomas. Last weekend, Thomas eclipsed the 2,000 yard mark, but he must be more careful in this one. The freshman has thrown seven interceptions to match his seven touchdowns this season.
As exciting as Thomas is though, the defense behind him is struggling right now. And because of it, make San Diego State your wager in Saturday’s College Football Game Lines.
Simply put, the Rams just can’t stop anyone, as they’re allowing over 418 yards of offense and 33 points per game. Which is music to the ears of Lindley, Hillman and this offense.
With San Diego State having scored at least 27 points in three of their last four games, it will be a big day for the Aztecs.
While they might get lost in the Mountain West shuffle, make no mistake, San Diego State is here to stay. Expect them to win comfortably Saturday in the College Football Game Lines.
College Football Game Lines Pick: San Diego State -17 ½
